Vehicle Description
The SS, or "Super Sport," option was available for the first time
in Chevrolet's 1961 catalogue. In 1962 it became a separate
sub-series within the Impala lineup, in both coupe and convertible
body styles. The SS models included special badging and "spinner"
wheel covers, side-molding inserts, an engine-turned rear cove
molding, and bucket seats with a console-for just $53.80 extra. No
wonder so many opted for it. The package also included chassis
enhancements and beefed-up springs and shock absorbers. Other
features included power steering and brakes, metallic brake
linings, a prominent column-mounted tachometer, and thin whitewall
tires.
This well preserved 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS's exterior is finished
beautifully in the factory colors of Saddle Tan with a contrasting
Adobe Tan roof which is more of a cream shade. The paint's deep
gloss is enhanced by brilliant chrome and brightwork. This classic
Chevy presents as originally ordered, with no exterior
modifications and with correct SS wheel covers and sporty
rear-mounted twin antennas. The original window sticker and dealer
invoice are still with the car, showing it was sold new at Roy
Smith Chevrolet in Eton, Ohio, on October 13, 1962.
The interior features a color coordinating Saddle interior in
excellent condition, with correct bucket seats, original clock and
AM radio, desirable factory tachometer, console and 4-speed with
upgraded Hurst shifter. A welcome upgrade is a modern air
conditioning system with air ducts discreetly mounted under the
dash.
Under the hood is the original matching-numbers 327 V8 paired with
a 4-speed manual transmission and power steering. Upgrades include
a Brawler 4-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock chrome open-element air
cleaner, quality Cool Case aluminum radiator with dual electric
fans, black billet hood hinges, and a dual-chamber master cylinder
linked to four-wheel disc brakes. A dual exhaust system rumbles
back through Magnaflow mufflers and exits with nostalgic chrome
exhaust tips.
