Vehicle Description
1969 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS396
In 1969, there were 10 versions of the Chevelle available and
nearly 500,000 units were produced. The SS396 package was available
for the Malibu Sport Coupe, convertible, 300 Deluxe Sport coupe and
Deluxe coupe with subtle trim differences in each. At the other end
of the spectrum, some Chevelles were equipped with a 140 horsepower
Turbo Thrift six cylinder engine, more than 200 horsepower less
than the 396.
For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS396 with a
title verified 45,368 actual miles. Owned by our consignor since
1988 and recipient of a frame off restoration in 2018 that included
new paint, quarter panels, wiring harness and interior.
Exterior
The respray in 2018 was true to the car's original color and this
time, the LeMans Blue was applied in modern two stage processes, a
fantastic color for the car, here accented by wheel opening trim,
chrome bumpers, and SS emblems to accompany the Chevelle script in
back. While we're back here, let's appreciate the design of the
rear, the wide, boxed tail lights that contour to the body lines,
the black band that connects them visually and wears the SS badge,
and the oval exhaust under the bumper. If you look up muscle car in
the dictionary, this angle would work to illustrate one. 15-inch SS
Sport wheels are a fine choice here and are wrapped in 235/60R15
tires for a nice, square stance. The Chevelle grille would change
dramatically in 1970, but the '69 retains a cool configuration with
quad headlights and horizontal trim. The glass, metalwork, lenses
and paint are excellent on the car and we could find no exterior
imperfections.
Interior
Beautiful black vinyl adorns the door panels and split bench seat
up front, all looking showroom fresh and these conditions prevail
in the passenger area in back. The top dog Chevelle has a rather
pedestrian control area, from the thin plastic steering wheel to
the simple gauge cluster and AM/FM radio, it keeps things basic and
it all presents cleanly. A Vintage Air system is onboard and up
top, the dash pad shows no flaws. Smooth black loop carpet
surrounds the floor mounted shifter, a Hurst unit with large white
ball for a handle while up top, the black headliner is high and
tight. The trunk is barren and clean and houses a fifth SS
wheel.
Drivetrain
In 2018, the 396 was bored and rebuilt to 402ci and looks right at
home in the spotless bay, shining valve covers reflecting the
peering eyes of onlookers. Nothing over the top here as the
4-barrel carburetor feeds the engine gas and a Tremec 3550 5-speed
manual backs it up and sends power to the 12 bolt with 3.31 gears
and Positraction. Slowing, stopping, and off course, power braking
is done through the power brakes with discs in front and drums in
the rear.
UndercarriagAgain, just another example of cleanliness in stock
like formation. No surface rust and only a drop or two of oil is
noted. The dual exhaust travels through Turbo mufflers before
finding those oval chrome tips. Suspension consists of coil springs
in front and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Clean pants and shoes are a requisite for our test drives and we
double check for this one so not to mar the near pristine interior.
The big V8 rumbles to life and we row through the shifter on our
test loop to find astounding power, great handling, straight
tracking and good braking. All functional items work on this nicely
restored car and we glide like an ocean wave back to the mall.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is one where BLUBYU would be a great license plate. But we're
sure you already have your own ideas, and why not, this is a very
nice car and obviously, if you've been in the market for an SS396
Chevelle, your car may have just landed at Classic Auto Mall.
Here's a turnkey opportunity for show and go decked out in a blue
wrapper for you. Do not redlight at the staging area, make the call
today!
