Vehicle Description
Originally shipped to Fred Hawkins Chrysler-Plymouth in Cornelia,
Georgia, this 1970 Plymouth Superbird was first sold on September
19, 1970. Now finished in Lemon Twist, the color swap happened
sometime during its years in dealer storage after being voluntarily
surrendered to a bank in 1975. That same dealer held onto the car
until 1982, when it was sold again with only 22,832 miles. It still
wears its black vinyl top, carries its factory Superbird aero
hardware, and rolls on correct 15" wheels wrapped in 235/60R15
Cooper tires. The overall presentation stays loyal to what made
this winged warrior a legend.
When the car passed into the hands of a Connecticut owner in 1987,
it stayed with him until his passing in 2023. During that time, it
was garage-kept and taken out only occasionally for short drives
and cleaning. Inside, the black vinyl interior appears stock and
correct throughout, from the bench seat and column shifter to the
original AM radio, gauges, and steering wheel. Even the
dash-mounted ventilation controls and lap/shoulder belts remain
intact. Every component inside reflects an honest and consistent
lineage from its early years, right down to the factory headliner
and carpeting.
The numbers-matching 440 Super Commando V8 still resides under the
hood, showing a partial VIN stamp just above the oil pan. Power
runs through a 3-speed A727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. The
car retains its original exhaust manifolds, dual exhaust system
with updated mufflers, and factory suspension layout. Front torsion
bars with a sway bar and rear leaf springs keep the stance correct,
while power steering and power front disc brakes help manage it
all. During the Connecticut ownership, the car saw regular upkeep,
including a newer gas tank.
