Vehicle Description
When discussing the Golden Age of muscle cars, one car undoubtedly
comes up time and again, vying for the title as King of the Muscle
Cars - the Chevelle Super Sport. One look at this 1967 Chevrolet
Chevelle SS 396, decked out in an eye-catching Bolero Red, and it's
easy to see why this car has inspired so much fear and respect over
the last six decades or so. Although the scoops are simulated, the
power dome hood is raised not only to look menacing, but also to
make way for the big L78 V-8 underneath. From the factory, the L78
produced an impressive 375 horsepower, but this car comes with a
professionally built engine that dramatically surpasses the
original.
Inside, we find a sea of red vinyl, featuring dual bucket seats
separated by a center armrest console. A three-spoke steering wheel
shows off an SS center cap, while just beyond that sits a
horizontal 120 mph speedometer that feels like a gross
underestimation given the potential of the SS. Sliding HVAC
controls keep things simple, while a relatively modern
AM/FM/Cassette player offers a bit more choice in music than the
original unit. Keen eyes will notice a small toggle switch on the
dashboard, located near the lower left of the steering wheel. While
the switch is inconspicuous, what it controls can make this SS
about as inconspicuous as a Tyrannosaurus Rex in a petting zoo.
More on that in a moment.
Under that aggressive hood, we find a 396 cubic-inch L78 V-8
engine, which has been built by Walden Automotive out of Doraville,
Georgia. Forged pistons rotate on a forged crankshaft, while ported
L78 heads are operated by a custom Comp camshaft and topped with an
aluminum intake manifold and single four-barrel Holley carburetor.
A set of long tube headers capped off with a MagnaFlow exhaust does
away with spent gases in thunderous fashion. But, if you're in the
mood for a bit more dramatic of an entrance, then simply flip that
switch under the dashboard, and a set of dual electric cut-outs
open up, bypassing the rest of the exhaust, and allowing this big
block to roar without limitations. And while the original SS was a
stout performer, this built 396 puts down an incredible 496
horsepower and 437 pound-feet of torque, with the dyno sheets to
prove it.

This 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 rides on an upgraded suspension
featuring a front sway bar, four-link rear setup, and a host of
Hotchkis parts interspersed for good measure. Power brakes,
featuring a set of front discs, ensure this SS can remain Super
Sporty regardless of whether the road is straight or starts to
twist and turn. Although there will never be a unanimous decision
as to which Golden Age muscle car is king, one thing is for sure.
If you get behind the wheel of this built 396 SS, it's going to be
hard for anyone to argue from all the way in your rearview mirror.
