The Saab 96 is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Swedish
automaker Saab from 1960 to January 1980, replacing the Saab 93.
The 96 featured aerodynamic two door bodywork, four passenger
seating and at first a two stroke three cylinder engine, later a
four stroke V4.
Up for auction is a 1972 Saab 96 2 door sedan showing 93,395 miles,
but the true miles are unknown. This car presents in good condition
and is complete with some trim pieces removed but still with the
car. The car has keys but does not crank.
Exterior
Baja Red covers the car and is in most good condition with areas
where something has dripped on the paint and stained and another
that was corrosive and now shows as surface rust on the hood. The
fantastic shape of the car slopes rearward and 15-inch "soccer
ball" Saab wheels are at each corner. Up front, Saab's distinctive
grille and center piece with an early Saab logo that harkens to its
aeronautical roots, and that center dictates the body lines built
into the hood. Saab badges reside on the C-pillars adding a spot of
blue to the red finish, and the name is on the rear decklid, the
front quarter panels, and on the mudflaps that remain.
Interior
Showing signs of long term storage, the interior begins with
oxblood and black door panels in vinyl with definite patina, some
general looseness, and spots of bloom, but all the parts are
intact. Low back pleated vinyl bucket seats benefit from tall head
restraints and are in good condition while the rear bench is dusty,
but in great shape. Low pile red carpet covers the floor precut to
fit the contours and trimmed with oxblood vinyl and should clean
up. The dashboard is in nice condition with some fading of the
plastic switches but clear gauges and a square clock to the right.
There's an AM radio and grab handle in front of the passenger and
an integrated glove box. The dash pad shows some warpage of its
soft materials but is not cracked or torn.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we have a 1.7 liter V4 rated at 64 horsepower with a
1-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed manual transmission rowed from
the column and keeping power up front with 4.875 gears. Brakes are
configured as front disc and rear drum.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and exits
through a straight pipe in back. Coil spring suspension is employed
front and rear with a beam axle in back.
Drive-Ability
Our little Swede will not crank.
