The name Lincoln which is a division of Ford started by Edsel Ford
to promote a "personal luxury car", and right from the get go, it
was off and running on this mantra with the Zephyr. It is
associated with Presidents and dignitary vehicles and is a
representation of the pinnacle of power and success. Once the
darling of the collector world with its slab sides, suicide doors,
its timeless styling reflects a unique and striking dignity.
Up for auction is a 1965 Lincoln Continental 4 door sedan showing
57,515 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This special car
presents in fair, restorable condition and it's not hard to
envision the final product cruising down a tree lined street. This
car has a title and keys and cranks but will not start for us.
Exterior
Straight panels highlight this classic even as the Dark Ivy Green
paint has fallen from its original grace with fading and a few
incidences of surface rust. The car is a clinic in right angles
with vertical front and rear ends and a straight shoulder line
highlighted by a bold piece of polished trim. Stainless trim is
also utilized to frame the windows, line the door edges that meet
in the middle, and along the rocker panel. The chrome bumpers are
in good condition but will need a polish, of course, and the
striated tail lights that cap the rear fenders are a nice feature.
A large C-pillar wears a modest Lincoln logo while creating a
semi-private space for rear seat occupants. The car rides on
14-inch wheels and all proper hubcaps are accounted for.
Interior
As we open the doors, we note some surface rust in the jambs and
patina throughout, beginning on the door panels which are elegantly
designed but the metals are now oxidized and there is evidence of
mold on the softer surfaces. This mold continues on the leather
seats which also exhibit drying and cracking throughout and in a
few occasions, peeling of the material. The steering wheel and
dashboard also shows patina in some pitting of the metal trim even
as the design with horizontal speedometer and Lincoln logo shaped
gauges fill the viewing field. The ribbed design runs the width of
the dash, underscoring the AM/FM radio and clock along the way.
Black carpet is all there and might be salvageable with a good
cleaning.
Drivetrain
The bay is dirty to be sure and housing a 430ci V8 rated at a
respectable 320 horsepower and fueled via a 4-barrel carburetor. A
Twin Range Multi-Drive 3-speed automatic transmission sends power
to the Ford 9" in back with 2.89 gears. This luxury car is supplied
with power brakes with disc in front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
Dual exhaust finds stock style mufflers and exits discreetly in the
back. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs
in the back.
Drive-Ability
This car cranks but does not start and the starter solenoid stays
engaged.
