1977 is seen by Cadillac enthusiasts as the "last of the breed" as
it was the year downsizing of the big, luxury brand started. Based
on the success of the 1976 Seville, both the DeVille and Fleetwoods
were reduced in size in '77, on average 10 inches in length, while
the Eldorado held its own at 224 inches. Despite loyalist jeers,
Cadillac broke sales records in '77 selling 335,785 total cars.
For auction, a 1977 Cadillac Eldorado hardtop presenting in barn
find condition. This once great front wheel drive car has seen
better days and now will serve as a project or parts car.
Exterior
Black paint with a white vinyl Landau style top must have been the
cat's meow back in the day, but today the black paint is weathered
and worn with surface rust throughout and that vinyl top is dry and
cracked. Those coach lights on the side were ultra classy back in
the day, illuminating next to the fixed quarter window for back
seat occupants. Some trim and most of the bumpers are still here
while the 15-inch steel wheels are now coated with surface
rust.
Interior
Red is the interior palette that begins on the door panels which
are accented with a healthy amount of simulated wood trim. The
split bench up front is torn up but the rear seats are amazingly
intact, and the upper halves are clean with big buttons that create
tufting. The steering wheel is toast but the dashboard components
are mostly intact with heavy patina, while the housing, including
red plastic and vinyl, is weathered.
Drivetrain
There's a 500ci V8 under the hood. Once rated at 180 horsepower,
it's topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a TH425 3-speed
automatic transmission that keeps power up front with 2.73
gears.
Undercarriage
Single exhaust and a stock style muffler emerge from the engine and
this cruiser is equipped with four wheel disc brakes. Suspension
includes front torsion bars and a 4 link with coil springs in
back.
