The Dodge M37 was a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck developed for service in the
United States military as a successor to the widely used Dodge
built WC Series introduced during World War II. Put into service in
1951, it served in a variety of configurations in frontline duty in
the Korean War and Vietnam War before being replaced by two
commercial off the shelf, (COTS,) based 1 1/4 ton trucks: the
Kaiser M715, (introduced in 1967 and supplied through 1969), and
the Dodge M880/M890 series in the 1970's.
Up for auction is a 1953 Dodge M37 Ton 4x4 truck showing 20,967
miles, but the true miles are unknown, but there have likely been a
few of them and some time in the sun as this truck presents roughly
with most of the pieces still in place. There are no keys for this
vehicle.
Exterior
A coat of grey is mixed with heavy patina including faded areas,
surface rust, and general oxidation on all the panels of this boxy
4x4. This stout truck looks ready for action and is not worried
about how much mud it gets into. It sits tall on 16-inch steel
wheels with LT rated tires wrapped around the 5 lugs. The cab has a
curious oval window in back instead of a rectangular one and a
tailgate tool mount is in place and a jerry can shelf is on the
right front. The only thing that truly lends color to the truck is
the Bridge Classification Plate on the grille, which is bright
yellow.
Interior
Olive drab green lines the steel doors on the inside as well as the
dashboard which is missing some paint around the gauge cluster that
houses five units including speed. In general, the paint throughout
the interior is cracked and peeling, including the frame of the
tiltable window. A three spoke steering wheel has plenty of patina
too but looks mostly intact while the one seat present has some dry
and cracking vinyl. The passenger side houses the battery box and
the seat from that side is missing.
Drivetrain
Looking mostly complete but tired and dusty is the 230ci L-head
inline 6 cylinder rated at 78 horsepower and fueled with a 1-barrel
carb. A New Process 88950 4-speed manual transmission is onboard
and splits power between the axles, both of which house 5.38 gears.
Drum brakes were standard issue for M37's and present here.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and the
suspension is kept simple with heavy duty leaf springs front and
rear.
Drive-Ability
There are no keys associated with this M37.
