The Dodge M37 was a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck developed for service in the
United States military as a successor to the widely used Dodge
built WC Series introduced during World War II. Put into service in
1951, it served in a variety of configurations in frontline duty in
the Korean War and Vietnam War before being replaced by two
commercial off the shelf, (COTS), based 1 1/4 ton trucks: the
Kaiser M715, (introduced in 1967 and supplied through 1969), and
the Dodge M880/M890 series, (in the 1970s).
Up for auction is a 1952 Dodge M-37 ton 4x4 truck showing 16,077
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Between '51 and '54, 63,000
M-37's were produced and they are among the favorite vehicles for
military truck collectors, likely due to their manageable size and
plentiful supply. There are no keys associated with this particular
M-37.
Exterior
We've seen our share of M-37's at the mall and they all share the
olive drab green coverage and this one is no exception. These tough
trucks start with a robust brush guard over the big grille and
headlights that are mounted on the flaring fenders. The squareness
of the cabin has the precision of military bed corners, and the
upright windshield is perfectly vertical and flat allowing for good
visibility over the working end of the rig. Side steps allow for
easier access to that cabin. The steel bed of the truck shows some
surface rust and a few rust holes but remains ready for some light
service. A 16-inch combat wheel along with three steel wheels carry
9" wide truck tires with large sidewalls.
Interior
It's as if someone took a spray gun and coated the inside with
olive green, right before the gauges were installed in the
dashboard. The cab is missing seats but retains the frames on which
they sit, one housing the truck's battery. The floor is steel
plated and home to the shifter, hand brake, and controls for the
transfer case. The gauges and information plates all show a good
bit of patina.
Drivetrain
Under the massive hood is a 230ci L-head inline six cylinder with a
1-barrel carburetor but missing a few pieces along the way. Behind
it is the New Process NP88950 4-speed manual transmission which
splits power between the axles, both with 5.38 gears. Of course,
drum brakes are at all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Keeping it simply, a single exhaust system flows through a stock
style muffler before terminating. Leaf springs suspension is
employed front and rear.
