World War II saw the creation of one of America's most beloved
vehicles, the Jeep. Now primarily produced for consumer use, the
Jeep was once a military workhorse designed to move troops, help
the wounded and more. The story of the Jeep begins in the late
1930's, when the United States military was searching for a vehicle
that was light, rugged and could travel over rough terrain. By the
early 1940's, the Jeep's design was complete, and the rest is
history.
Up for auction is a 1949 Jeep Willys CJ2 showing 3,706 miles, but
the true miles are unknown. Tools, a jerry can, and mounted spare
wheel are all part of a complete package that presents in very good
condition. The engine cranks but does not start.
Exterior
Desirable military Jeeps all share the basic exterior features of
olive drab green paint in a flat finish and this one is adorned
with fresh white decals including an Army star and vehicle numbers.
This one wears the slat grille up front, a jerry can secured by
leather strap in back, and an ax and shovel on the side. 16-inch
wheels are naturally painted green and a spare is mounted on the
back of this open Jeep. External handles are bolted to the left and
rear sides and a flexible antenna is also included. The body is
straight and presents in good condition.
Interior
Green canvas covers the simple front buckets and modest rear bench
while everything from the black steering wheel forward is olive
green including the steel dashboard that houses buttons, control
knobs, and black faced gauges, along with engraved steel plates
with a variety of important unclassified notifications. The floor
has a rubber mat and there is a gun post that rises behind the
front seats.
Drivetrain
Also mostly green for camouflage is the 134ci L-head inline four
cylinder producing 60 horsepower, fueled by a 1-barrel carb, and
mated to BW T90 3-speed manual transmission splitting power with
the help of a Dana 18 transfer case. For the differentials, we find
a Dana 25 up front and a Dana 44 in back, both with 5.38 gears.
Drum brakes are equipped front and rear.
Undercarriage
The engine disperses a single exhaust with a stock style muffler
and suspension consists of leaf springs front and rear.
Drive-Ability
The engine of the Army veteran cranks but will not start for
us.
