1954 Pontiac Star Chief Deluxe 4 Door Sedan
The Pontiac Star Chief is an automobile model that was manufactured
by Pontiac between 1954 and 1966. It was Pontiac's top trim package
on the Pontiac Chieftain, with later generations built on longer
wheelbases, and serving as the foundation platform for the Pontiac
Bonneville. The car was easily identified by three and four
star-like trim features along varying areas of the car, a feature
all Star Chiefs were equipped with star arrangements.
Up for auction is a 1954 Pontiac Star Chief Deluxe 4 door sedan
showing 71,370 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car
presents well with most of the heavy patina reserved for the
interior. The engine cranks and runs on starting fluid. Between
1954 and 1957, the Star Chief was Pontiac's prestige model and was
based on the Pontiac Chieftain. In 1954, Pontiac also introduced
air conditioning with all the components under the hood, a first
for the price range.
Exterior
Single stage black paint covers this fantastically shaped car,
augmented by unique trim that starts with a spear that transforms
into a gravel guard on the flared rear fender. Designers
embellished this trim with one that borders the cabin with a dip in
the stainless on the back door that eventually circles the entire
top section of the car. Then of course, there's that wide band of
stainless, almost a stripe, over the truck lid and hood,
terminating with an amber Indian head on the nose of a jet jutting
forward as a hood ornament. Even the visor is trimmed in stainless
and 15-inch wheels are decorated with full covers.
Interior
Tan inserts with green borders on the doors shows wear with fading,
staining, and looseness and one is completely off. The colors
translate to the cloth benches, front and rear, which are dirty and
in the case of the front, worn and torn. Patina is present on the
steering wheel, its horn ring, and shifter stalk, all leading to a
nicely designed dashboard with a textured metal faceplate and
polished framing around each component including the AM radio and
vent control panel, all in generally good shape. Green loop carpet
covers the floor while the trunk is barren and shows its age.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 249ci straight eight cylinder rated at 127
horsepower, fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor, and mated to a
Hydramatic 4-speed automatic which routes power to the rear axle
and 3.23 gears. Drum brakes are employed on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
On board is a single exhaust system with a stock style muffler.
Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in
the rear.
Drive-Ability
This amazing classic cranks and runs on starter fluid.
