1982 Mercedes-Benz 380SL Roadster
Personal luxury sports car. If there is such a category, the
Mercedes SL class which has an enduring design that in the R107
generation, lasted nearly 20 years virtually unchanged. It was that
good and associated with a level of affluence once reserved for top
earners, but now is an affordable and iconic car with the
engineering and comfort Mercedes is renowned for.
Up for auction is a 1982 Mercedes Benz 380 SL roadster showing
64,497 miles, but the true miles are unknown. For many years,
owning an SL was the epitome of success and they were widely used
in television and film to illustrate the wealth of a character. The
80's television series Hart to Hart featured an SL most
prominently. This one presents nicely with its share of interior
patina, but cranks and runs.
Exterior
Astral Silver Metallic is the coverage here, still single stage in
1982, and the instantly recognizable shape of the SL includes boxy
corners, a lowered profile, and the ribbed rocker panels mirrored
in the tail light and marker lenses, there to shed snow and rain in
order to keep the lights visible. The U.S. versions wore bumpers
that extended well past the body work while a large Mercedes star
fronts the iconic grille and headlight layout. The removable
hardtop is colored keyed with the car and provides enough windows
to create an open greenhouse in the cabin. The 14-inch wheels are
Mercedes specific and the body and trim here are in good
condition.
Interior
MB Tex, Mercedes' durable leather counterpart, first appears on the
door panels in blue, showing some slight patina but in general good
condition. It is used on the robust front bucket seats as well and
here's where some wear is visible, especially on the driver's side
where tears are noted. The rear area is bordered by padded MB Tex
which surrounds a carpeted package shelf with some fading of the
carpet apparent. Our dash pad is cracked but the dashboard and
instrument cluster itself is in decent shape, a bit dusty but
intact. The wood veneer around the shifter in the center console is
a bit faded but the hardware is in good condition. The trunk is
lined in deep pile blue carpet and without exposure to the sun,
remains in very good condition.
Drivetrain
Driver quality is how we find the 3.8 liter SOHC V8, fuel injected
and rated at 155 horsepower. A 4-speed automatic is behind it and
power is routed to the rear axle with 2.47 gears. As a premiere
luxury sports coupe, this car comes standard with power disc brakes
on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust flows back to a stock style muffler just before
emitting twin exhaust tips out back. Independent coil spring
suspension is found front and rear.
Drive-Ability
The car cranks and runs.
