1978 Cadillac Eldorado Hardtop
The ninth generation Eldorado ran from 1971 to 1978 giving way to
the 10th generation when the car would be completely redesigned and
greatly downsized. The convertible was dropped for 1977 and styling
changes made that year including a new grille and relocated tail
lamps that did not change for the 1978 and a 425ci V8 replaced the
500.
Up for auction, a 1978 Cadillac Eldorado hardtop showing 63,353
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car cranks and runs on
2+2
Exterior
Colonial Yellow covers the big car and shows some patina and some
exposure wear. The unmistakable face comes at you with dual
headlights and fender ends adorned with column like ornamentation,
flanking a substantial bumper that could double as a battering ram.
An enormous trunk filler panel follows the rear window and vinyl
top which has coach lamps mounted to the sides. Large chrome
nacelles house the tail lights at the end of one of the longest
rear quarter panels and fenders you're likely to see! The exterior
is dirty but appears to be complete.
Interior
Antique Light Yellow and cream is the palette used on the interior
beginning on the door panel which are also trimmed with simulated
wood and based with a carpeted kick panel. There are some tears on
the driver's side and some general patina on both, but otherwise in
decent shape. Biscuit tufted pillow topped leather seats offer
virtual clouds of comfort both in the split bench up front and the
bench in back and both have drop down armrests for luxury and
comfort. Once again, they have patina but are fully intact although
we note the ashtrays and lighters are gone from the back seat. A
very simple instrument cluster is found at the base of the steering
column, accented with wood, while switchgear and the radio are
found on the mid panel and tan carpet floods the open and flat
floor. No hump for this front wheel drive Caddy.
Drivetrain
Under the massive hood is a fairly clean looking 425ci V8, topped
by a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 180 horsepower. A TH425
3-speed automatic is tied to it and keeps power up front with 2.73
gears. Power disc brakes are found at all four corners.
Undercarriage
Suspension consists of torsion bars up front and a 4 link with coil
springs in back. A single exhaust runs through a stock style
muffler.
Drive-ability
The car cranks and runs on 2+2.
