The Edsel Villager is a station wagon that was produced and sold by
Edsel from 1958 to 1960. Introduced using the narrower Ford station
wagon body, the Villager was a divisional counterpart of the Ford
Country Sedan. As the Edsel Ranger was derived from the Ford
Fairlane, the Villager shared much of its body stampings with the
Country Sedan wagon. Though Edsel declined in sales overall for
1959, the 7,820 Villagers sold for the year outpaced sales of all
three model lines combined for 1958 by nearly 1,500 vehicles.
Up for auction is a 1959 Edsel Villager Station wagon showing
65,480 miles, but the true miles are unknown. The wagon is in good
condition but the interior is mostly gutted and will need carpet,
door panels, and more, while other parts are stored in the back.
There are keys but the engine is locked up.
Exterior
A restoration was started many years ago when the Snow White paint
with blue accent stripe was added to the car. After that, the car
was put in storage and basically untouched. Edsel's familiar horse
collar grille is up front and all chrome parts are in very good
condition. The shoulder line towards the rear of the car is
dramatic and terminates with the tail lights and small fins above
them. The greenhouse under the long roof is bright, thanks to the
modest pillars, curved front windshield, and bowed rear window. The
hood takes the top of the horse collar and creates body lines back
to the cowl while fender ornaments are perched in front. 14-inch
wheels carry 205/75R14 tires and hubcaps are found in the car.
Interior
White paint coats the doors which have no panels nor hardware. The
front bench seat is in rough shape with alternating panels of blue
vinyl, gold cloth, and white vinyl. The split bench in back also
presents in rough condition. The rear section is mostly barren and
topped with boxes and parts while the headliner is in place. Up
front, patina coats everything including the steering wheel and
artfully designed dashboard with unique gauge housing, polished
trim, and metal knobs. There is an AM radio and clock in the
polished mid panel which also tops the glove box then turns the
corner, contouring against the doors.
Drivetrain
Under the long hood is a 332ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and
mated to a Mile-O-Matic 2-speed automatic transmission which routes
power to the Ford 9" rear with 3.10 gears. The Edsel is equipped
with four wheel drum brakes.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust carries a stock style muffler while front coil
springs and rear leaf springs make up the suspension.
Drive-Ability
We found the engine to be seized.
