1981 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
1981 was an interesting year in Corvette lore. As it happens, cars
were being manufactured in two plants, one in St. Louis, Missouri
and the other in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In mid 1981 all
manufacturing would shift to Bowling Green where, among other
things, they had a facility that applied enamels and clear coats
where the Missouri cars only received single stage lacquer. So it
represents a pivotal year for the make and Bowling Green has been
at the center of Corvette manufacturing ever since.
Up for auction, a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette showing 88,398 miles, but
the true miles are unknown. This car appears to be in restorable
condition and cranks but does not start.
Exterior
Dark blue metallic is the primary color here, showing some patina
and augmented by a white hood with red and blue graphic stripes.
The front air dam looks damaged while cladding surrounds the tail
section giving it a lowered Trans Am racer look. Side gills adorn
the front fenders and T-tops are overhead while aftermarket five
spoke chrome wheels carry 255/60R15 tires. Hidden headlights up
front and quad tail lights in the back help define America's sports
car.
Interior
The door panels are missing but fortunately the Corvette
aftermarket industry is strong. The red leather bucket seats are
here however, and in decent condition with no tears noted. The
instrument panel shows some patina, the center cluster of gauges is
present, and from the radio framing down to the center console is
broken or missing pieces or in need of restoration, and that
includes the shifter and its dried, leather boot. The red carpet in
the cargo area is decent, but the area in front would benefit from
cleaning or replacement.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a complete looking 350ci V8, originally rated at
190 horsepower, here with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and mated to
a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to 2.87 gears
in back with Positraction. Power disc brakes would be standard on
front and rear wheels.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust enters a stock style muffler, then exits as two
tailpipes split wide. Coil spring suspension is used up front while
the independent system in back utilizes a composite fiberglass
transverse leaf spring.
Drive-Ability
This car cranks but does not start.
