The Jeep DJ, (also known as the Dispatcher), is a two wheel drive
variant of the four wheel drive CJ series. Production started in
1955 by Willys, which was renamed Kaiser Jeep in 1963. In 1970,
American Motors Corporation purchased Kaiser's money losing Jeep
operations and established AM General, a wholly owned subsidiary
that built the DJ through 1984. 18,000 DJ-5L's were produced in
1982.
Up for auction is a 1982 AM General DJ5-L Postal Jeep showing
52,160 miles, but the true miles are unknown. You can imagine this
car delivering mail on MASH, as it now wears military colors. But
chances are, the Dispatcher was never used in combat, and certainly
not this '82.
Exterior
We've seen our share of customized postal Jeeps over the years and
this olive drab green one is a first! Of course, it's equipped with
sliding doors for easy access to mailboxes on the curb while the
grille presents in the five slot configuration which does not deter
from its Jeep looks. The box rear section has big windows and a
solid top, and the cargo area is accessed through the large door in
back that opens like a door, not a hatch. 15-inch wheels are
painted to match and this vehicle has two yellow light bars on top
for extra safety.
Interior
Sparse as can be, the right hand drive cabin has one seat over a
flat and open floor and that seat has gray cloth with plenty of
patina. The steering wheel fronts a very basic instrument cluster
with a few gauges and a number of knobs and switches. A simple
shifter rises from the barren floor.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 2.5 liter Iron Duke inline four cylinder with a
2-barrel carburetor and mated to an A904 TorqueFlite 3-speed
automatic transmission that sends power to the Dana 44 rear
axle.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust carries a stock style muffler and suspension
consists of leaf springs front and rear.
Drive-Ability
There are no keys associated with this Jeep.
