Led by General Manager Edward N. Cole, Chevrolet designed a
revolutionary new car. It was powered by an air cooled horizontal
six cylinder engine made almost entirely out of aluminum. The
engine was mounted in the rear of the car, driving the rear wheels
through a compact transaxle. Suspension was independent at all four
wheels.
Up for auction, a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair 900 2 door coupe with
unknown true miles, presenting nicely inside and out. The engine
cranks but will not start.
Exterior
Distinctive dual headlights in their aluminum bezel stand out from
the single stage red paint that coats this car and its low profile,
square edges, and sporty roofline. A louvered rear hatch is there
for heat extraction and quad tail lights, a hallmark of all
Corvairs, take in the reverse lights on the inboard lenses over a
straight chrome bumper that gently wraps the corners. 13-inch
wheels have the proper wheel covers here and are wrapped in
185/80R13 white wall tires.
Interior
Clean black vinyl door cards adorned with ornamental trim pieces
occupy the doors and are framed in the body's red paint. Front
bucket seats, upright and square, have a pleated insert and some of
the same metal ornamentation as the doors and also present cleanly.
The rear bench shares the grained vinyl and is in very good
condition. A red steering wheel, large and thin by today's
standards, front a metal based instrument panel that fits into the
dash's cove and has a simple speedometer along with various knobs
and indicator lights. An AM radio is central and the metal glove
box completes the trio of aluminum based components, all showing
some patina. The black loop carpet on the floor is in good
shape.
Drivetrain
Under the rear hatch is a driver quality 145ci flat 6 cylinder with
dual 1-barrel carburetors and mated to a 2-speed Powerglide
automatic transmission that keeps power in the back and through
3.55 gears. Drum brakes are employed on the front and rear
wheels.
Undercarriage
Dual exhaust comes off of the flat 6, through a stock style
muffler, and exiting through a chrome tip that jogs to the right in
back. Independent suspension is configured as coil spring up front
and swing axle in back.
Drive-Ability
The vehicle cranks but will not start.
