SoundIf any company could lay claim to putting what it has learned
from Formula 1 into its road cars, it would be McLaren. With the
MP4-12C, the Woking, England-based company has set about creating a
supercar sports coupe from the ground up, with its mission
statement as its goal: Make It Fast. But this is not just a
straight-line warrior, it's exceptionally good at going around
corners, and stopping in the space of a heartbeat.A defining
characteristic of just about any supercar is a look that makes
admirers stop in their tracks. Drive an MP4-12C, and be prepared
for an onslaught of adulation. The McLaren has more curves than a
supermodel and skin as scintillating as one. This particular
example is striking in its special order Azure Blue finish, which
accentuates the sculpted bodywork. Massive air intakes define the
MP4's sides, while even the vertical-opening doors are a work of
design magic. Up front, long and trapezoidal headlights are
reminiscent of Ferraris, and the rear boasts high-mounted exhausts
that howl from above, not below, the bumper. The McLaren's
mid-mounted V8 heart, meanwhile, is displayed under a panel of
glass for all to see.The cockpit of this McLaren boasts a very
appealing layout with great functionality. Remarkable craftsmanship
and attention to detail throughout welcomes both driver and
passenger, and the car is quite comfortable. The black
leather-swathed, bucket seats are firmly bolstered and deeply
contoured and are in fantastic condition. Directly in front of the
driver is the large oval instrumentation that will let you know
when you're traveling at jail speeds. Between the driver and
passenger is a long, thin console that stretches up the dash and
grows into a vertical screen that resembles the world's biggest
iPhone. There is even cargo space on a bench behind the seats in
addition to the cavity up front near the bumper (remember, this is
a mid-engine car).The team at McLaren are leaders in Carbon Fiber
Technology and their use of the material in the Monocell of the 12C
is groundbreaking. They show off the Carbon Fiber in areas of this
car such as the Engine Covers, Engine Bay Panels, Mirror Casings,
Interior Trim, and Sill Panels. McLaren's artistry shows in its
fine-boned leather-upholstered dash and skinny center console. The
MP4-12C shines when making time over back roads. The seating
position is far forward within the wheelbase and the view of the
road rushing at you is immediate, as if you're riding on the tip of
a missile.The heart of every McLaren MP4-12C is a twin-turbo V8
engine that makes 592 horsepower. All that power is transferred to
the rear wheels via a dual-clutch 7-speed transmission that can
shift automatically or manually via F1-style paddle shifters. In a
car that weighs less than 3,000 pounds, all this might make for a
vehicle that can hit a top speed of 205 mph and blast to 60 mph in
about 2.8 seconds. Shifts of the 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle are
delivered with rifle-shot quickness through simple steering wheel
paddles.If it's the quickest sports car you want, then there's just
no going past the MP4-12C. This British bulldog is a sledgehammer
capable of pulling out mind-blowing lap times. McLaren's racing
heritage is infused into every pore of the MP4-12C. Its build
quality is brilliant, the ride is unmatched by any sports car, and
its speed will widen the eyes of even the toughest of car nuts.
