Vehicle Description
1980 Jeep CJ7
"The 1980 CJ series: The latest development of the legendary Jeep
vehicles, born, tested and proved in the stress of World War II.
Today, CJ's retain all the traditional toughness, durability, and
capability associated with Jeep for nearly 50 years, but a re
refined and adapted for the needs of the 80's". From the 1980 sales
brochure
For consignment, a 1980 Jeep CJ7 showing 56,559 miles, but the true
miles are unknown. This rig was completely disassembled and
restored, and a new steel body was added. The transformation was
carefully photographed and documented by our consignor.
Exterior
Brown paint and its contrasting tan cover and doors makes for a
handsome presentation, accented here with black features that
include the light rings, fender flares, and glossy 15-inch wheels.
LED lights now adorn the car and give an updated vibe and better
visibility. A slight nose up attitude helps with the approach angle
and the full size spare in back is easily accessed if you pop a
tire. The tan canvas top has tinted plastic windows, and the
removable doors are lightweight and easily stowed in back. One area
of bubbling under the paint is the only exterior imperfection we
note.
Interior
Boat seat material was used to upholster the seats, both the front
buckets and rear bench. That is, after the seat frames were rebuilt
and foam added. They are sharp looking with the contrasting saddle
brown over camel along with Jeep embroidered into the headrests.
The interior is clean and the body colored paint is fresh, backing
switchgear and the black faced gauges in the center of the dash,
now featuring digital readouts along with rotating needles. The
shifter and range selector rise from the hump and the entire floor
is covered with a rubberized mat that almost welcomes mud and snow.
The steering column was refurbished and a new steering wheel
added.
Drivetrain
The clean bay houses a clean engine, this being the 2.5 liter four
cylinder, rated at 87 horsepower and fed fuel via a 2-barrel
carburetor. The transmission is a BW/Ford SR4 4-speed manual with a
new clutch and pressure plate, all mated to a Dana 20 transfer case
and power is directed to the Dana 30 up front and the AMC 20
differential in back, both with 3.54 gearing. Power brakes stop
your slide down the mountain and are equipped as power disc up
front and power drum in back, and all components including the
lines, master cylinder, booster and more are new.
Undercarriage
Fresh, clean, and dry underneath and mostly dressed in satin black
paint. A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler before
finding its end in the back while leaf spring suspension is
utilized front and rear. This is one of those undersides your
father might say you could "eat off of".
Drive-Ability
We've said it before, there's not much more fun you can have with
an inanimate object than a drive in a Jeep. As Jeeps have grown
over the years, we love the compact size of this gen CJ, rendered
practically unstoppable by the big, knobby tires. The 2.5 fires up
and the Jeep shifts well and gladly propels the rig forward. The
well sorted and completely rebuilt example and its functions all
operate just as intended and we roll the knobbies back to the mall.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Take the doors off, take the top off, heck, take your top off! The
CJ is all about outdoor adventures, even if that's a short trip to
Wawa, (7/11, Sheetz, Circle K, enter your convenience store here).
Now, put your shirt back on to enter the store, but be sure to turn
around and look at your cool rig sitting in the lot. Imagine it in
a canyon, on a beach, or a forest trail, then load up your supplies
and Big Gulp and head out. This CJ needs to get dirty!
