For Sale: 1972 Dodge Challenger in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1972 Dodge Challenger Hardtop

"You don't have to be a diehard Dodge enthusiast to acknowledge the legacy of the Challenger in the American automotive culture. It's precisely this culture, the one that's making the Challenger one of the most sought after car models today, with collectors out there willing to pay big bucks for an all original model in mint shape. The production of the Challenger dropped from close to 77,000 units in 1970 to just 26,000 cars a year later. The decline continued in 1972, as the company produced fewer than 23,000 Challenger for this model year." Autoevolution.com

For consignment, a 1972 Dodge Challenger hardtop showing 2,233 miles, but the true miles are unknown. The Challengers fantastic design was good enough to lend cues to the revision of the car in 2015 and created a new wave of Mopar enthusiasts based heavily on the original design.

Exterior
This highly optioned car is colored by a fan favorite, Plum Crazy, here in two stage application that shines bright and augmented by black RT stripes down the side and 340 SIX PAK on the fender. Our familiar face with dual headlights and arching grille falls at the end of the sport hood, pinned and enhanced with dual intake scoops that grab air directed by the contoured bends of the sheet metal. The rear is as cool as the front with quad tail lights in a black fascia over a straight chrome bumper and square exhaust tips that are square. A rear wing caps off the muscular tail. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels are a nice choice and carry staggered size tires for an aggressive stance and a date code of late 2023 and early 2024. Imperfections include bubbling in numerous places and a difference in the passenger door color and finish of the stripes on the door.

Interior
A woodgrain insert warms up the black plastic door that is otherwise basic and clean and that woodgrain is found in one other place in this slightly modified interior and that's on the center console that is home to a short T-shifter and driver focused configuration. Racing bucket seats have been added to the front with red accenting and harness gaps on top while the back bench remains in stock design and all are clean and undamaged. A Grant GT chrome steering wheel on a newer steering column fronts a new instrument cluster, here backed in brushed aluminum appearance housing AutoMeter SportComp gauges that are bold and modern. An AM/FM/CD radio is on board. The black loop carpet below is mighty fine and protected by Challenger branded carpeted mats and the headliner, while intact, shows areas of some looseness. The trunk is clean and houses a space saver spare over a gray mat.

Drivetrain
Mopar Performance valve covers top a 340ci V8 from the '68-'73 period, now capped with an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 8 3/4 inch rear while power brakes slow the vintage plum down with discs up front and drums in back. The bay is uncrowded and clean and worthy of exposing it to onlookers.

Undercarriage
Generally driver quality underneath but nothing is out of place, just some patina, flaking paint on the frame, usual surface rust, and residual oil about. The dual exhaust flows from headers into glasspack style mufflers, then split to terminate through four chrome tips. Suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf springs with Caltracs bars in back.

Drive-Ability
Our 340 cranks to life and makes its presence known with a healthy exhaust note that we would substitute for radio tunes any day. The Challenger is up to the challenge, tracking straight, braking well, and dare we say, handling better than a B-body. The cherry on top of this plum is that all functions available operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Some will contest that this is one of the great designs of the era and the fact that it's bathed in one of the high impact colors of the day bodes well for this nicely sorted Challenger. Due to low production, we don't see a lot of '72's here at the mall, so this presents an uncommon opportunity to get into one. Summer fruit season is almost over as we write this, and you'd be plum crazy to miss out on this purple pony car.
