Vehicle Description
1973 Triumph TR6 Roadster
"You know, as much as I like all the hypercars and super cars we
do, there's really nothing much more fun than driving these things.
It's the final iteration; it still feels like a classic British
sports car from the 60's. When you drive other cars from the 70's,
they feel contemporary. This one feels more vintage.". Jay Leno
speaking on this '74 TR6 in the latest episode of Jay Leno's
Garage.
For consignment, a 1973 Triumph TR6 roadster showing 82,759 miles,
but the true miles are unknown. This car was the recipient of a
frame off rotisserie restoration with every component inspected,
restored or replaced as needed. Even the frame received internal
rust prevention and new rubber bushings throughout.
Exterior
Trapezoid shaped marker lights front a handsome and slightly
aggressive front end on this burgundy beauty where round headlights
dictate the shape of the rounded fenders that roll into the flat
hood with a gentle upward bow. In back, broad rectangle three
colored tail lights extends the amber section beyond the body where
it is met with a red side marker, a simple and elegant design. The
back is also enhanced with the upturned quad tailpipes of the Monza
system and if you ever doubted this was a sports car, those tips
put that notion to bed. The windows on the newer black canvas top
are crystal clear while the slightly curved windshield stands
upright with a slight rake to keep wind at bay. 15-inch repainted
wheels and their 205/70R15 tires look fantastic in their correct
argent gray, and those tires are brand new with a late 2024 date
code. We could not find any exterior imperfections on this stunning
TR6.
Interior
Black vinyl door panels present cleanly with a simple stitched
pattern that adds some character while new covers on the bucket
seats are also very nice and cover fresh foam. A three spoke
steering wheel fronts a refinished wood dash that was sealed with
several coats of polyurethane and houses clear gauges with patinaed
trim rings and plastic square knobs labeled with engraved white
lettering. The shifter rises from a plastic base over a very fine
black loop carpet that also covers the package shelf behind the
seats, all very clean. Carpet also finishes the boot which is
surprisingly roomy.
Drivetrain
Presenting very cleanly under the hood, or bonnet, is a 2498cc
inline six cylinder, rated at 101 horsepower and fueled by dual
Stromberg 175-CD-2 1-barrel carburetors. Per our consignor, the
engine was gone over with new .020" over rod and main bearings,
fresh rings installed the standard pistons after honing, while a
new camshaft, lifers and timing chain were also added. The brake
system and fuel system were both fully rebuilt, right down to
ethanol resistant rubber lines. The brakes are power assisted with
discs in front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
Whistle clean underneath with the only surface rust found is
coating the dual Monza exhaust system. All suspension components
were restored with rubber bushings, there are new U-joints
throughout, and the axle hubs were upgraded and the rear
differential received a new pinion seal, stub axle bearings and
seals. The suspension consists of coil springs up front and rear
with semi trailing arms in back.
Drive-Ability
We expected a trouble free ride from this well sorted Triumph and
indeed, a triumphant experience was delivered. The roadster runs
great, handles nicely, and is free of squeaks and rattles. The
reverse lights are not illuminated but all other functions operate
just as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Great detail went into restoring this car. For example, the body
was stripped to bare metal, gaps meticulously aligned, then was
subject to three rounds of block sanding, and finished with a
single stage urethane paint. It also has a new wiring harness. In
other words, no stone was left unturned to restore this car and the
next owner will inherit a tremendous amount of work, all documented
with the receipts they will receive with purchase. You can still
restore that one under the tarp in your garage, but while you're
doing it, you can enjoy driving and showing this one!
