Vehicle Description
1996 AM General Hummer H1
There are more than 50,000 followers in the Hummer H1 Facebook
group. The Hummer Club holds events nearly monthly around the
country with a mission to "promote the safe use and enjoyment of
Hummer vehicles in a family oriented atmosphere, to encourage land
use in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Tread
Lightly! Organization" as well as other tenets to foster the social
and education aspects of the group.
For consignment, a 1996 AM General Hummer H1 with 2 miles on the
odometer, but the true miles are unknown. If you don't want to be
mistaken for a military vehicle as H1 often are by the civilian
class, own one with a pedestrian color and for further impact, add
some flashy graphics to the side and you'll fit right in with
commuter cars. Well, maybe.
Exterior
You can't miss it, it's wide and white, Bright White to be exact,
and adorned on every side with splash graphics in green and purple
that create a vibrant and very noticeable ride. Barn doors on the
back still have enough room to the side to house tail lights and
fixed windows and in profile, there are not many vehicles this
angular and square. Black features contrast with the white paint
and include the hinges, handles, bumpers, and enormous exterior
hood latches. 16.5-inch chrome 8 lug wheels carry knobby
38x18.50-16.5LT tires with a late 2020 date code while Hela lights
and industrial sized D-shackles are also present to assist with
offroad adventures. A crack in the paint above the drip rail is the
only exterior imperfection we note.
Interior
Starting in the way back, we find large, carpeted speaker boxes
that still leave enough room for sizable cargo and it's pretty much
spotless. Opening the side door, we find something your military
versions will never have, door panels! Simulated wood grain accents
combine with gray plastic and vinyl to create a welcoming gateway
to the cavernous interior where all four passengers find tall
backed gray bucket seats and if you think you want to hold hands
with your adjacent partner, think again as they sit in another time
zone. All that room allows for a vast dashboard, all backed in
woodgrain and containing gauges, toggle switches, a Kenwood
AM/FM/CD radio, and an A/C knob panel that is definitely civilian
based. The passengers get plenty of room to spread out or even hit
some yoga poses if the mood strikes them. Gray carpet covers the
floor while the ceiling remains smooth and clean.
Drivetrain
Pivot the front clip forward to reveal the clean driver quality 6.5
liter turbo diesel V8 rated at 194 horsepower, fuel injected, and
mated to a 4L80E 4-speed automatic that splits power between front
and rear axles, both with 5.24 gears. Power disc brakes are found
at each massive wheel.
Undercarriage
No lift needed here as we have a clear view of the underside from
the ground, and all is nice and clean amongst the magnified
components of this big rig. Suspension consists of coil springs
front and rear and a single exhaust flows through a stock style
muffler before terminating underneath.
Drive-ability
Talk about feeling planted and invincible! We feel like we could
cruise through a tornado if need be, (we don't recommend it), the
size, diesel sound, and thick steel body are no match for even
above average weather conditions. Obviously, knobby tires make some
noise to go along with the diesel, but if you want a whisper quiet
ride, you probably stopped reading a long time ago. Other than the
horn, all functions on this beast operate as they should and we
steer this straight tracking 4X4 back to the mall. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
Dramatic, exciting, and with more presence than a Cyber truck, this
H1 should be added to your fleet as the go to, go anywhere ride
you'll need when your daily driver becomes mundane and you just
need a change of pace. Of course, the vast Hummer community will
welcome you in and fill you in on the extreme capabilities of these
bigger than life grocery getters!
