Vehicle Description
1967 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport
For a mere $105.35 in 1967, you could check the box for the Rally
Sport Package to add to just about any Camaro you ordered from
Chevrolet. And 64,842 people did just that, leaving 156,064 Camaro
owners without the package that added headlight covers, relocated
reverse lights, rocker molding, badging as well as some interior
features. That $105 option has appreciated greatly over the years
and can add as much as 20% to the value of a classic Camaro.
For consignment, a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport showing 723
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Z22 was checked on the order
form for this car, making it a real Rally Sport package recipient,
but now the drivetrain backs up its sinisterheadlight covered
appearance. Oh yes, this black beauty has more ponies than it was
born with.
Exterior
Grabbing your before anything is the 671 blower and massive intake
scoop rising high above the hood. Then that hundred dollar package
appears, worth every penny, as the hideaway headlights and black
painted grille provide a striking fascia where an "rs" appears on
the center. The side fenders are also demarcated with lower case
"rs" emblems and there is appropriate trim at the wheel openings
and rocker panel. The chrome bumpers, window trim, and tail light
trim really pop against the Tuxedo Black, as do the reverse lights
on the rear valance. Then there's the one piece tail lights which
are unique to the 1967 rs and different from all first gen Camaros.
15-inch Weld DragLite wheels carry staggered size tires that give
the car a racy and slightly raked stance and a rear spoiler caps
off the decklid and might even create some downforce at speed. The
paint and metal are fantastic on the car and we could not find any
exterior imperfections.
Interior
The outside leads you to believe you might find some racing seats
and a roll cage, but what we find is the original configuration
beginning with black vinyl door panels with standard vertical
pleats and silver hardware. Low bucket seats, also in black vinyl,
are in great shape and so is the back bench which fold down.
Abillet batwing type steering wheel presents to the driver and
leads to a stock instrument panel, a simple arrangement of two
gauges in an angled bezel, while mounted under the dash is a row of
auxiliary gauges to monitor engine conditions. The center stack
contains the original fan levers and an updated Kenwood
AM/FM/cassette radio. A Hurst shifter rises from the center console
with an inviting cue ball handle poised for action. Black loop
carpet floods the floor and is in good condition, the headliner is
fully intact, and the trunk wears a cut to fit black carpet piece
to present a clean luggage compartment.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, over the hood, and through the hood is a 454ci V8,
bored .030 over and topped with dual Holley 750 cfm 4-barrel
carburetors over a 671 blower and just about every component,
pulley, and bracket are polished and clean. It's tied to a muncie
m20 4-speed manual transmission with a blowproof bellhousing
sending power to the 12 bolt rear axle with a consignor stated 4.11
ratio and Positraction. Drum brakes are found on all four
wheels.
Undercarriage
A finned and polished rear differential covers stands out on the
clean and mostly black underside where we find no surface rust. We
do note a touch of oil on the pan and transmission. The dual
exhaust comes from headers and moves through Thrush mufflers before
terminating out of sight out back. There's a newer heavy duty
driveshaft under here as well as coil springs in front and leaf
springs with traction bars out back.
Drive-Ability
It's a little odd to have that 671 in front of you and no five
point harness to wrap around you, but we're game! A pump of the gas
and 8 barrels of fun run gas through that whining tower of
goodness, and off we go onto the loop. Yep, there's obvious power
under foot as we row through the gears and the sound is stupendous.
No ticks or misses here, the RS roars and runs like a lion. We note
the horn, reverse lights, and boost gauge are not working, but all
other functions afforded us operate as they should. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
RS was a cosmetic package that some would argue improved the look
of the first gen Camaros. Well, this one has been to the gym and
now adds some muscle to the muscular looks the RS package provides.
This is one bad to the bone black beauty and if patterns continue,
will not be at the mall very long, so don't fall asleep at the
wheel!
