Vehicle Description
1962 Cadillac DeVille 4 Door Hardtop
No car in all the world is so deeply admired for its magnificent
motoring luxury as Cadillac.Drivers and passengers alike enjoy
conveniences, appointments and sheer elegance that are unique to
this great motor car. Whether your needs and inclinations direct
you to the intimacy of a coupe for the convenience of a four door
sedan, there is a Cadillac DeVille model for your taste. Lofty
prose excepted from the sales brochure replete with elegant photos
of obviously well to do owners out on the town, coming back from
the steeplechase, or leaving the opera.
For consignment, a 1962 Cadillac DeVille four door hardtop with a
title verified 39,366 actual miles. This garage kept beauty was
repainted 25 years ago and it still looks fantastic. Less than
17,000 6 window sedans were produced and unless you're at a
Cadillac/LaSalle show, seeing one is fairly uncommon.
Exterior
Its original color has been duplicated with a respray and this time
in modern two stage application. It had to have taken a few gallons
of Somerset Blue Metallic to cover this long car, all 222 inches
with wide expanses of horizontal surfaces on the roof, hood and
decklid. Fins here are dramatically sharp out back and bordered by
the tail lights, a design so good, it's been used in photographic
art. Unusual for any car are the larger reverse lights with red dot
centers, visually connected by rear trim lines and nacelles that
give off down facing fins with a continuous flow of chrome. Fender
mounted indicator lights are forever cool and sit at the front of
stainless trim that trails back to the cowl. In profile, the fixed
rear window is perfectly angular which contrasts with the curved
A-pillar that borders the vent window. 15-inch wheels wear white
walls, and the rears are partially obscured by streamlining fender
skirts. The paint, metal, and glass are fantastic on the car and we
could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
The pinnacle of American automotive design can be seen in the
details of the door panels, artistically constructed with gray
cloth, vinyl, and brushed nickel trim. The door pull itself is a
polished oval affair with integrated courtesy light shining down
and giving way to descending silver trim. The bench seat is
accented with square trim buttons and the cloth insert is bordered
by gray leather and a center armrest drops from the recessed
middle. We note some wear on the edge of the cloth on the driver's
side upper while the rear bench remains in fantastic condition. Up
front, the theme is elegant and horizontal, beginning with the
steering wheel's horn ring that goes from 9 o'clock to three
o'clock and frames the horizontal speedometer and other square
features of the dashboard. There are round knobs and a clock in the
middle between the AM radio and grille like trim of the panel above
the glovebox. The open floor features gray loop carpet and Cadillac
branded rubber mats, and the massive gray headliner is in excellent
shape. The spacious flat trunk is lined in gray and houses a spare.
Without a doubt, this car is show worthy inside and out!
Drivetrain
We're met with a clean and original looking engine bay, home to the
390ci V8, rated at 325 horsepower and topped by a 4-barrel
carburetor. Behind it, a Hyrdamatic 4-speed automatic sending power
to the 2.94 gears out back. Power drum brakes are found at each
wheel.
Undercarriage
We've got driver quality conditions underneath with typical surface
rust on steel components, some oil present near the pan and on the
rear differential. The single exhaust flows through a stock style
muffler and resonator before terminating through a steel tailpipe
under the car. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and a 4
link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The enormity of the car translates to the inside where there's lots
of room, making it a comfortable place to pilot this Caddy. The
long hood arrives at the test loop ten minutes before the rest of
the car, or it seems that way due to the sheer length. The 390 runs
smooth, the ride is legendary in its fluidity, and turns are to be
anticipated with such a long wheelbase. All functions operate as
they should on this '62, and we bring it back to port. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
A visually striking car that's emblematic of a time when Cadillac
was indeed the "Cadillac of cars" and were reserved for the well to
do. That's still the vibe you get from this car, and you can't help
but be impressed with its design and how its mass is used to
interpret those elements flawlessly. This is pure American elegance
and a fantastic representation of the brand and time period.
