For Sale: 1996 Chevrolet Camaro in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS Coupe

"Hands down, the Z28 SS was judged the most racecar-like, right down to its well bolstered bucket seat. It consistently topped out at or above 120 mph in fifth gear. nThe Camaro wins this test, and it wins it going away. It was the quickest, the fastest, and the best handler in every one of our measured performance tests. It's a terrific race car right out of the Cosmoline, needing only a roll cage to complete the terrorist transformation begun by SLP." From Car and Driver's test, December 1995, of a '96 SS, Mustang Cobra, and Firebird Formula WS6.

For consignment, a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS showing 66,843 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Depending on the source, just 2,263 or 2,410 Camaro Z28/SS were built in 1996 and no matter what, that's a low number. So low, that cars received individual numbers, (this one is #194), and when you have a numbered car, you know you have something special!

Exterior
Bright Red was the most common of the colors available and why not, there's nothing more eye-catching than red and back when speeders were tagged visually, it was better known as "write me up red". But law abiding citizens like you will have no problem in this F-body wedge with its pointed nose that cuts through the air, directing some of it to the distinctive scoop on the hood. The forward leaning red C-pillar and smoked glass T-tops give the cabin the profile of an F15 fuselage and the integrated rear spoiler is almost invisible until you get behind the car. It's also there where the SS emblem and dual exhaust tips clue you in to what you're following and when you go to pass, you'll notice the 17-inch wheels specific to the SS, wrapped in staggered sized low profile tires. This car's been well cared for and we could not find any glaring exterior imperfections.

Interior
Ebony plastic door panels are softened by gray cloth inserts and a carpeted kick panel and both present cleanly and provide some storage at the base. The cloth bucket seats have held up well and still have robust side supports while in back, deep 2+2 seats will keep the little ones planted and side support is provided by the walls. Horn buttons flank the airbag on the leather wrapped steering wheel with ergonomic bumps at 3 and 9 o'clock and if you remember driver's ed, that's where your hands should be. Up front, a straightforward instrument cluster with red needles against black faces and bright white digits, relaying all the information you'll need. The A/C panel in the center could not be more elementary and the integrated AM/FM/CD radio is ready to accept your Counting Crows discs. The stout Hurst shifter fronts the SS number plate and requisite cupholder, while clean low pile carpet is protected by SS mats. The cargo area is also carpeted and clean and shallow with the exception of the recessed area for T-top stowage.

Drivetrain
Tucked deep into the engine bay is the clean and legendary 5.7 liter LT1 V8 that pumps out 305 horsepower. It's mated to a T56 6-speed manual transmission sending power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.42 gears and Positraction. This high performance muscle car gets power disc brakes at all four wheels.

Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with typical surface rust, road dust, and some oil on the pan that drifts back to the transmission. The single exhaust flows to a Hooker Aerochamber which disperses two tailpipes that run tandem out the back. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and coil springs with a torque arm in back.

Drive-Ability
Comfortable, capable, and pleasantly analog, the cockpit is a nice place to spend some time, but we can't lollygag here as we have a job to do. We row through the gears to bring this car around the loop and the engine runs well, shifts are smooth, and handling, of course, is very good. The LT1 delivers astounding power and the icing on the cake is that all functional items afforded this car operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The limited run of the 1996 Z28/SS cars means they're already collectible and the clean presentation of this example means you'll have a show car that you can drive and enjoy without breaking the bank! When Springsteen sang, "We drove eight hundred miles without seeing a cop, we got rock and roll music, blasting off the T-top" he was very likely talking about an F-body like this. This car can serve as your fountain of youth or your first foray into the American sports car world.
