Vehicle Description
1973 Plymouth Barracuda Hardtop
"And now, a sportier version of Plymouth Valiant, a 1973 Barracuda
and 'Cuda, both sporty two door hardtops. Special sports cars that
offer you the most in style and performance. Sporty front and rear
ends, all the new engineering features that make them different.
Extra care in engineering, it makes a difference!" From the
promotional video for the Barracuda, Duster, and Valiant of
1973.
For consignment, a 1973 Plymouth Barracuda hardtop with a title
verified 125,296 actual miles and a numbers matching engine.
Purchased by our consignor in 1996, he conducted a mild restoration
including a rebuild of suspension components, brake system, and new
materials on the seats, carpet, and door panels.
Exterior
Single stage Rallye Red got our attention, and it will get yours
too! White provides a striking contrast with a broad side stripe
that follows the shoulder line and the white vinyl top. Up front,
arguably one of the coolest noses in the business with a gill like
divider between the black grilles and round headlights. A 'Cuda
style power bulge hood has been added for more muscularity while
out back, a black fascia hosts quad tail lights, another design
feature that stands out in the vast world of Mopar badassery.
14-inch Mopar Rally wheels hold 215/70R14 BF Goodrich's with
letters out, an era trend that just looks right. For imperfections,
we note some bubbling at a wheel opening and scattered other areas,
some surface rust on the pinch weld of the rocker panel and a scuff
there as well, a crack in some filler down low and in other places,
and some rust bubbles under the stainless trim of the vinyl
roof.
Interior
Newer white plastic door panels set the tone for the interior
palette and present cleanly without mars. Legendary Covers redid
the front bucket seats in white vinyl, looking good and a nice
match for the rear bench still in their original covering and
showing just a touch of age. A two spoke sport steering wheel
fronts a clean and simple instrument cluster with the speedometer
to the left of the column and four condition gauges headed to the
right and all of it is in great condition. A Pioneer AM/FM/CD
brings the tunes up to date a bit but fortunately, the center
console remains in 1973. Not only is the T-shifter based in a
woodgrain faceplate, but it's walled off from the passenger with
the rising right cove of the console itself which gently blends
into the storage bin behind it. Black loop carpet looks great and
is protected by 'Cuda embroidered mats and the trunk is spotless
with a gray vinyl mat and 5thwheel spare.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, the numbers matching 318ci V8 in driver quality
condition and rated at 150 horsepower. It's topped by a 2-barrel
carburetor and mated to an A904 3-speed automatic transmission.
Power gets sent to the 8 3/4" rear with 2.76 gears while the
rebuilt power brakes are supplied as front discs and rear
drums.
Undercarriage
Driver quality but clean underneath with minimal and typical
surface rust and dry conditions with the exception of some dampness
on the rear differential. Our consignor notes, and it's clear to
see, the front and rear suspension has had some work with replaced
bushings, ball joints, and torsion bars. In back leaf springs make
up the rear suspension. A single exhaust flows through a stock
style muffler just before exiting without fanfare through a beveled
steel pipe under the contouring rear valance.
Drive-Ability
We enter what is a simple interior by today's standards, classic
and analog in every way. We pump the gas and turn the key and the
original 318, which was rebuilt prior to our consignor's ownership,
cranks to life without protest. Off we go, onto the test loop where
the car lacks suspension squeaks, the new bushings doing their job.
She tracks straight and handles well and the only things that don't
work are the heater blower and air conditioner. All other items
like gauges, lights, and radio, operate as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a great looking Barracuda we think makes an excellent
driver. The color and originality and just the fact it's a
Barracuda makes it show worthy but you don't have to sweat about
that first paint chip or keeping the engine's chrome reflective and
bright, because there isn't any. It's a car that looks fast
standing still and even with a 318, is Mopar royalty!
