restoration in 2008 with full history on a 3 owner car In 1965 this
car was given away to the track points champion driver. Mid-America
Racing Affilates (MARA) operated four dirt tracks in the eastern
Iowa area. The tracks were at Tipton, Marshalltown, West Union, and
the Air View Speedway in Monticello. Races in Monticello were held
every Friday night and adult admission to the grandstand was $1.50.
MARA purchased this 65 Impala as their Pace car for the year to be
given to the top points champion for the 65 racing season. At the
end of the summer the pace car was awarded to Walt Carney of West
Branch for total overall points. The co-owners and builders of
Walts race car Was Elmer Peters and Gene Gray of Tipton. They each
were awarded New Color Console television sets. The race car was
#97, a 1957 Chevrolet four door with the top cut off, they spent
almost $2000 on the car and motors/trannys. One week the
transmission went bad at the end of the race and the tight schedule
required Elmer to change it on the car trailer, in motion, while
they hauled it to the next track. That's dedication! Each week at
the tracks a pretty lady would sit up on the convertible boot in
the back seat of the pace car and carry the American flag for the
pre-race national anthem. Later in the night the pace car came back
on the track to parade lap for the Feature event. A display board
with newpaper copies of the nights wins comes with the car. Walt
Carney sold the car to Mildred Valvaline in 1969. In 1979, Elmer
Peters son found the car. It had been not driven for quite a while,
clutch was out of it, and in need of many other repairs. After some
negotiation, he bought it for $75. Keeping the car a secret, he put
in a clutch and got it running. He and his siblings split the costs
and gave to his father on fathers day the next year. In 2008 Elmer
Peters did a full frame off restoration and the car went from a
283, 3-speed manual to a 350, automatic, bucket seats, and has been
used sparingly since, pacing the Tipton race track once again .
