Vehicle Description
1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon Hardtop
"Champions know each other by the pace they set. For 1986,
Oldsmobile offered Cutlass Salon and Cutlass 442. These coupes go
head to head with the best. Cutlass Salon's driving environment
will satisfy even the most demanding. The reclining buckets seats
let you find your ideal driving position. Rallye instrumentation
puts you in touch. The Firm Ride and Handling suspension system is
standard." From the 1986 Cutlass brochure.
For consignment, a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon hardtop with a
title verified 234,079 actual miles. This is a two owner car with
conditions that belie its high mileage. More than a million
Cutlasses were produced in 1986.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by

Exterior
The now infamous G-body design was once ubiquitous and today serves
as a classic relic of the 80's, often making appearances at car
shows and occasionally, on the road. This one is decked out in two
stage Dark Blue Metallic augmented by a double red pinstripe
running the shoulder line, then dipping to match the angle of the
back. Brushed aluminum trim on the decklid also is trimmed in red
above a chrome bumper. In front, recessed square headlights flank
the Oldsmobile split grille and once again, reflective chrome
underscores it all. 14-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels look
great here and are wrapped in 235/60R14's all around, and chrome
exhaust tips make an appearance behind the rear wheels. Hold on to
your hat, because we couldn't find any exterior imperfections on
this Cutty.
Interior
Handsome door panels wear blue velour over molded plastic, a
carpeted kick panel, and simulated woodgrain trim on the pull
handle. Stitched velour also covers the buckets seats, both in
great shape as is the rear seat which looks mint. The foam based
blue steering wheel leads to a tidy and well organized instrument
cluster with round gauges in a black bezel behind a sheet of
plexiglass, and woodgrain trim for the vents. A darker grain is
used around the radio in the center of the dash where the A/C
panels reside and the Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio used in millions
of GM cars of the era. The center console is in great shape with
matching wood applique' and the T-shifter may have been borrowed
from a car with gray interior. Blue carpet covers the floor along
with vintage style GM rubber mats, the headliner shows typical sag,
the cloth coming off of the thin foam backing, and the trunk wears
its black carpeted mat and houses a space saver spare. The
aftermarket for G-bodies is strong and finding a replacement for
the headliner, if that's the route you go, will be easy.
Drivetrain
Red heater hoses highlight the clean engine bay where a 307ci V8
lives with a 4-barrel carburetor and 140 horsepower. A 200R4
4-speed automatic backs it and sends power to the 10 bolt in back
with 2.56 gearing. Power disc brakes are in front with power drums
in the back.
Undercarriage
Scattered bits of surface rust and some residual oil on the pans
are the only minor demerits we find on this underside, which is
otherwise clean. The single exhaust looks newer and flows through a
stock style muffler in the back which sends out two exhaust pipes
terminating in chrome tips behind the rear wheels. There is no
catalytic converter on board. Suspension is standard coil springs
up front and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
If you had a Regal or Monte Carlo, this cabin will be very
familiar, and with familiarity comes comfort. We've been here
before. The 307 comes to life after a pump of the gas and a turn of
the key and the Cutlass provides a smooth ride, runs well, and is
surefooted around turns at normal speeds. We note the temperature
lever is stuck on heat, but all functions in this classic Olds
operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
This fine cruiser has been well maintained and is probably the best
looking, high mileage G-body we've had in a while. Kudos to those
who care for their car in this manner. Now it can be enjoyed by its
next steward who can be proud to drive this straight clean car to
the next show or cruise night. There's a reason that amongst the
thousands of cars we've featured on social media, the Oldsmobiles
of this era elicit the largest and most fervent reactions. If you
didn't have one, you knew someone who did! Well, now's your chance
to get back in!
