Vehicle Description
1991 Volkswagen Jetta GL Sedan
Want to talk popular? Volkswagen produced nearly 500,000 Mk2 Jetta
for the United States. Objectively handsome, they were practical
sedans and practically everywhere, often serving as a first car
hand me down for the college bound 18 year old in the 90's. Today
they have jetted from the mainstream, seeing one is special, and
owning one is a ticket into V-dub nation!
For consignment, a 1991 Volkswagen Jetta GL sedan showing 156,587
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Our consignor states it's
been garaged for at least the last eight years during which it saw
new tires, rotors, clutch, water pump, timing belt, and head
gasket.
Exterior
You had a choice of 10 colors in 1991, and this one is an
attractive Ascot Gray Metallic which is complemented by black trim
including the bumpers, wheel openings, door handles and window
trim. The very Euro and still new to the market composite
headlights flank a clean, black plastic grille while fog lights
occupy the opening of the front air dam below the bumper.
Distinctive font is used on the Jetta emblem out back and
accompanies tail lights that are identifiable as VW with a black
mid panel that creates a clean and flush latch panel. Side windows
are sizable especially out back where the fixed quarter window
extends visibility for rear passengers. 14-inch stock wheels carry
185/60R14's with a late 2019 date code. Overall, the paint and
pinstripes show some patina and visible imperfections include some
touched up chips, a surface rust spot, scuffs on the corners,
various scratches, and some oxidation of the center caps.
Interior
Various shades of gray adorn the tidy door panels including a light
gray cloth insert on each, while black hardware is consistent with
the palette. The cloth bucket seats have held up very well and rear
seats look barely used. Unique H-shaped spokes connect the rim of
the steering wheel to its hub and frames an era normal square
layout of the dash, beginning with the instrument cluster in a box.
Good sized toggles avoid confusion while a newer AM/FM/CD with AUX
and USB now occupies the center stack, along with the A/C panel.
Vents and storage lead to a stout shifter in the center console
above gray carpet, clean and protected by off the shelf rubber
mats. The good sized trunk has a carpeted mat with evidence of use,
but generally clean.
Drivetrain
Before the days of plastic panels, the 1.6 liter SOHC inline diesel
four cylinder is visible! It's fuel injected and rated at 52
horsepower, set into motion via a 5-speed manual transmission
keeping power up front into 3.94 gears. Power brakes are supplied
with front disc and rear drum.
Undercarriage
Pretty darn clean underneath with some residual oil on the pan, the
only item that veers from the typical patina. The single exhaust
travels down a center tunnel, entering a stock style muffler as it
goes, then exits out the gap in the rear valance. Suspension used
is Macpherson struts in front and twist beam axle in back. There's
a trailer hitch onboard with the smaller receivers in back.
Drive-Ability
Our consignor says "needs nothing" and indeed, this Jetta sparks to
life with a turn of the key and delivers a well balanced ride,
straight tracking, and more than adequate handling. The cab is
comfortable and likely accounts for the popularity. You sit high
and feel in full command of the car which provides great
visibility. All functional items operate as intended. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
GL is a trim level and stands for Grand Luxe, but it could easily
be interpreted as Great and Little. It may be considered small, but
Goldilocks might say the size is just right, straddling the world
of compact cars with practical, four door, four passenger sedans.
The VW world is an enthusiastic one and everyone has a Jetta story,
so get ready for some thumbs up in your direction when driving this
attractive and now classic VW!
