Vehicle Description
1997 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS Coupe
SLP was founded in 1986, and their mission was to provide late
model Camaro & Firebird owners with a complete selection of "Street
Legal Performance" products that would improve performance,
handling & fuel economy of their cars. In 1996 SLP introduced its
first Camaro SS to the automotive world and received rave reviews
for its stunning performance, handling and appearance.
For consignment, a 1997 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS coupe with a title
verified 79,098 actual miles. The SS struck fear into the hearts of
street racers everywhere when they showed up. This was no mere
mortal Z28. With external features that screamed dominance, throngs
of chromed muscle cars stepped aside to make way for the new king
of the road.
Exterior
Fronted by the mighty and functional hood scoop, our SS is bathed
in Flame Red paint complemented by black painted bezels into which
recessed headlights reside, just one year before composite
headlights would appear. In profile, the distinctive SS emblem is
clearly visible while a black C-pillar and smoked T-tops give the
car the jet canopy look first popularized by the Acura NSX six
years prior. The SS receives special 17-inch wheels that also
distinguish it, and here they are wrapped in 275/40ZR17's with a
date code of late 2021. Out back, the integrated rear wing is wide
and hovering over three part Camaro tail lights, a smooth valance,
and dual exhaust tips on one side. Imperfections include scratches,
an odd discoloration to the side molding, chin scrapes, curb rash,
flex cracks, and some minor bubbling on the clear in spots.
Interior
Contrasting from the red is a Light Gray palette on the inside
where stitch patterned leather buckets up front and 2+2 in back
present in good condition with only minor wear up front. Door
panels are standard Z28, simple and clean with integrated storage
and speakers. Aleather covered Hurst manual 6-speed shifter is seen
within reach of the driver in the center console along with a small
storage compartment, cup holder and ashtray. This car comes with
power locks, power windows, power mirrors, black face analog
gauges, the factory AM/FM/CD radio. Low pile gray carpet in nice
shape covers the floors and is protected by Chevrolet branded
weather mats in the front. The cargo area under the rear hatch has
a lined flat surface and a deep valley to accept the T-tops when
stowed.
Drivetrain
GM's venerable 5.7 liter LT-1 presents cleanly under the hood,
topped by a K&N filter to screen the air coming from the scoop
and helping the engine generate 305 horsepower. It's backed by a
T56 6-speed manual transmission that sends power to the 10 bolt
rear with 3.42 gears and the desirable G80 Positraction RPO.
Naturally, power disc brakes are afforded to the Camaro king and
occupy each of the four wheels.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with surface rust, residual oil on the
pan, and quite a bit on the rear differential and surrounding sling
near the U-joint. The dual exhaust joins at a wide single pipe
which tracks back to a Flowmaster muffler which sends out a pair of
tailpipes which could use a good polish. Suspension consists of the
standard coil springs up front and a torque arm with coil springs
in the back.
Drive-Ability
The car cranks but would not start. We suspect bad fuel or bad
OptiSpark.
With a little TLC, this very clean legend of the Camaro world will
be back on the street terrorizing muscle cars and imports on your
comfortable daily commute to work. According to some sources, this
is a 5.5 second car to 60 and a sub-14 second car in the mile,
still respectable numbers in 2025 and the top dog of the production
Camaro line for a number of years.
