Vehicle Description
2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Dale Earnhardt Signature Edition
In 2001, for the 2002 model year, Chevrolet partnered with Richard
Childress Racing and Dale Earnhart to produce a very limited number
of Dale Earnhardt Signature Edition Monte Carlo SS. They produced
3333 of these cars powered by a 3.8 liter V6 engine and was backed
by a 4-speed automatic transmission. Earnhardt died in a final lap
collision on February 18, 2001
For consignment, a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Dale Earnhardt
Signature Edition with a title verified 8,118 actual miles. This
garage kept beauty is a shining example of a limited edition Monte
Carlo and even without the cosmetic adornment, the seventh
generation Monte's represent the final versions of the car and a
widely loved platform.
Exterior
Black just like the race car of the legendary Intimidator,
augmented by distinguishing graphics on the sides, including the
smaller numeral 3 and Earnhardt signature. From miles away, you can
recognize this special car by the silver rocker cladding,
delineated by a bright red stripe that encircles the car. The
smooth roofline sweeps back to be abruptly interrupted by the
upturned spoiler on the decklid which caps the racy rear end with
large tail lights, INTIMIDATOR expressed boldly, and dual exhaust
flanking a modest splitter on the rear valance. 16-inch star shaped
wheels carry 225/60R16's and they all look good as does the rest of
the exterior. Chin scrapes are the only glaring imperfection, and
you'd have to be doing sit ups on the road to even see them.
Interior
Nicely sculpted molded two tone door panels in Ebony and Gray greet
us with a swing of the door, housing power lock, power window and
power side mirror switches. Slipping inside we see two tone leather
accent seats with black leather bolsters, and lighter gray
perforated and stitched vinyl inserts and an embroidered red bowtie
on each headrest. In back, a more curvaceous than usual rear seat
defines two seats with enough belts for three, and a pull down
armrest when the middle space is open, and it's all very clean. The
instrument panel with this car is the Signature Edition instrument
cluster and is badged RCR and utilizes Dale's signature and number
in the speedometer. An AM/FM/Cassette & CD digital readout radio is
on the center stack, connected to a 6 speaker sound system which
has an automatic volume increaser as road noise increases. On the
floor, gray carpet is protected by matching fitted carpeted, our
foam backed headliner is just about flawless as it surrounds the
sunroof, and the trunk is finished in gray cloth panels and looks
unused.
Drivetrain
A 3.8-liter V6 with SFI is sitting in the clean engine bay under
the hood and rated at 200hp. Attached to the transverse engine is a
4T60E 4-speed automatic transmission which routes power to 3.29
gears, keeping all power up front. Four wheel power disc brakes are
onboard to confidently stop.
Undercarriage
As one would expect with so few miles, the most minimal surface
rust and dry conditions are found underneath. A single exhaust runs
down a center tunnel, swivels sideways around the gas tank, then
splits into two where the original mufflers lead to short tailpipes
and polished tips. Independent Macpherson struts for the front and
back populate the sport tuned suspension.
Drive-Ability
Low mileage cars rarely disappoint, and this one is no exception.
It fired right up and provided a pleasant ride around the test loop
and the cabin is a comfortable place to be for short trips or long
hauls to Dover or the Tricky Triangle. All functions were working
flawlessly, and it provided a smooth ride with nice smooth
acceleration, good handling and straight braking. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
The legend lives on, not just Dale Earnhardt, his legacy is
obvious. But Monte Carlos were enthusiastically embraced by
Americans for decades and seven generations. No matter the year,
affix that name to a car and consign it here, and we almost
immediately get phone calls on it. Well, here's one of 3,333 that's
a special edition, instant show car, and a fantastic weekend
cruiser.
