When discussing the Golden Age of muscle cars, no debate would be
complete without mentioning the mighty GTO. One of, if not the
first, family-sized car to get a big-horsepower motor stuffed
between its fenders, the Goat has made a strong case for being the
G.O.A.T. of its time. One look at this fully repainted Cardinal Red
1972 Pontiac GTO Restomod, and it's easy to see why this car
continues to have a loyal following to this day. The last year of
the second generation, this '72 model arrives with just 3,155 miles
since its rebuild. From its dual-nostril hood to its powder-coated
wheels or its big deck spoiler, this GTO looks menacing from any
angle.
Inside, we find a fully and beautifully redone black leather
interior. Dual bucket seats donated from a 2015 Chevy Cruze allow
this GTO to offer seats that are both power-assisted and heated. A
padded Grant GT steering wheel sits in front of a three-pod Dakota
Digital gauge cluster, while a Vintage Air HVAC setup offers air
conditioning to keep things cool. A single DIN 6.9-inch touchscreen
infotainment screen features navigation and is compatible with
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via Bluetooth connectivity. The
center console is equipped with wireless charging and features both
USB-A and USB-C ports.
Under that aggressive hood, we find a built 6.0-liter V-8 engine,
donated by a 2017 Chevrolet pickup. Topped with an LS3 intake
manifold, this small block is outfitted with an aluminum radiator
and dual electric cooling fans, along with a set of long tube
headers capped off with a sweet-sounding FlowMaster exhaust. Power
is routed through a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission before
being sent out to a 12-bolt rear end where those ponies are
transferred to the pavement via a set of 18-inch, five-spoke Ridler
wheels shod in 275/40ZR-18 General Tires. At the same time, a set
of staggered power-assisted 245/45ZR-18s handle steering duties up
front.
