Vehicle Description
Unusual full-sized Mopar muscle. Super straight bodywork in
beautiful Jamaica Blue. Very nice interior and fresh top with
correct materials. Strong-running 440 with numerous upgrades. If
you want to stand out, this Sport Fury delivers in a big way! When
was the last time you saw a 1969 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible?
These were rare when they were new and today you'll find half a
dozen Superbirds before spotting one of these. We wonder why,
though, because this is a very handsome car. The styling is
definitely corporate Chrysler, with fuselage styling starting to
creep in over the angular design, giving the Sport Fury a tidy look
that works rather well. The sheetmetal on this full-sized ragtop is
laser straight with a lot of attention paid to getting the final
finish smooth and glossy. It looks fantastic in person. The doors
close easily, the hood snaps down without a big slam, and someone
spent the time to get the little stuff right. You'll note that the
original grille is in excellent shape, the bumpers have surely been
re-chromed, and the red, white, and blue emblems on the quarters
are a nice way to break up all that blue. And speaking of blue, the
B7 Jamaica Blue the car wears today is its original color, so it
looks right. Other details include LED headlights, factory
fender-mounted turn signal indicators, and nice lenses all around.
A lot of this stuff is practically unobtainium today, so it's nice
to see that it has most of its original equipment intact. The blue
bucket seat interior is a nice find in a full-sized cruiser, giving
it a muscle car attitude with lots of stretch-out space for
everyone. We believe the seats and door panels have been replaced
with authentic reproductions and it all remains in outstanding
condition. The carpets might be a little faded (they might even be
original), but beyond that it's really nice. The steering wheel is
a funky 3-spoke unit that frames the original gauges, along with an
auxiliary tach on the steering column and a pair of white-faced
dials down by the console (it has a factory tach, but it is not
operational due to the electronic ignition). Power windows are
always welcome in a big convertible, saving you the trouble of
reaching for distant window cranks, and it still has its original
AM radio in the dash but it's been supplanted by a Pioneer AM/FM/CD
head unit in the glove box. You'll note this was an original
factory A/C car, but the system has been removed at some point in
the past. Overhead, there's a fresh white power convertible top,
installed by the experts at Bedford Auto Trim, and it uses the
correct long-grain vinyl unique to Chryslers of the period. It
powers up and down effortlessly and stows under a matching white
boot. And of course, in a car like this, the trunk is positively
massive, housing a full-sized spare and a pair of speakers that
really improve the driving experience. For your full-sized
convertible you need a full-sized engine, and this Sport Fury
delivers with a muscular 440 cubic inch mill with all the usual
upgrades. There's an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on top of a
matching aluminum intake, a set of long-tube headers, and an
upgraded ignition system to make it reliable. The engine itself
looks nicely dressed in Hemi Orange engine enamel with chrome
accents, and it certainly looks the part of a Mopar muscle car
powerplant. Up front there's a large aluminum radiator, along with
a newer aluminum water pump and things like power steering and
power front disc brakes make it easy for anyone to drive. The
engine bay is tidy and looks like someone cared when putting things
together. Underneath it's mostly original, so it's not shiny and
perfect, but you can see that the floors are in good condition and
the correct hardware is in place. The TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic
shifts cleanly and feeds 3.23 gears in the 8.75-inch rear axle, so
it's a relaxed cruiser at speed. You'll also find a brand new dual
exhaust system with crossover, upgraded adjustable tie rods, and
air shocks out back to keep this big ragtop on an even keel.
Aluminum Centerline-style wheels give it a racy look and are
wrapped in staggered 235/60/15 front and 275/50/15 Mickey Thompson
radials for a nice rake.Documentation includes some service
receipts. We like unusual cars, and this Sport Fury fits in that
sweet spot?seldom seen, but not weird. It's also quite affordable
compared to its more well-known siblings, making it a whole lot of
car for the money. There's a lot of time and money wrapped up in
the build, making this a car you can drive and show with pride. If
you like your muscle a little bigger, this Sport Fury is for you.
