Vehicle Description
*1993 Volkswagen Type-2 Bay Window Kombi*The Volkswagen Type-2
Kombi holds a special place in American history and is an icon of
the 1960s. Although sales of the Type-2 bus ended in the United
States by the late 1970s, production carried on for an additional
25 years in Mexico and these buses were still being produced as
late as 2013 in Brazil. This Volkswagen Kombi came out of the
Brazilian plant in 1992 and was imported to the United States in
2021.Finished in a beautiful shade of Ivory over a red interior,
this Kombi is a rare barn-door example, where most of the Type-2s
featured a sliding side door. Over time, this van has been subtly
upgraded to give it that classic 1960s vibe, with body-color
bumpers, a metal and wood roof rack with matching side ladder, and
red painted wheels with chrome hubcaps and white wall tires.
Additional custom work includes a pop-out windshield and pop-out
rear window which were features on some of the older VW vans, and
help aid in ventilation when you're driving in the summer. The
interior has been wrapped in red leatherette with matching red
carpeting in the passenger areas. With two rear bench seats, this
van can fit eight passengers, and all of the seats feature lap
belts for some additional safety. Red and white checkered curtains
are affixed to all of the side windows and rear window of the van,
allowing you to hang out in the van without people looking in at
you. Additionally, a heater has been added along with a modern
stereo with a tablet on the dashboard to control the infotainment
and back-up camera pre-wiring.Powering this bus is a rear-mounted
1.6-liter air cooled flat-4 that produces an estimated 50
horsepower, which is sent through a 4-speed manual gearbox. In this
bus, the transmission has been upgraded with an extended-length
billet shifter for easier shifting, and the engine has been
upgraded with a great sounding sport muffler. One of the major
benefits of getting a later-production van like this is the
addition of front disc brakes which provide far more confidence
inspiring stopping than the 4-wheel drums that came before. Under
current ownership, Buttera Motors in Kirkland, WA helped sort out
some issues with the van and ensure it was running reliably. It's
hard to ignore the cultural impact the Volkswagen Kombi had on
American motoring in the 1960s and 1970s, and the significance is
many times greater elsewhere in the world. These days, many
restored VW Buses have values reaching towards the 6-figure range,
yet are really no different from behind the wheel to this more
modern Brazilian example. If you want a Bus to pile the whole
family in and have fun, it's hard to imagine a better example than
this 1992 Type-2.*Key Features* * 1.6-Liter Air-Cooled Flat 4 * 50
