For Sale: 1973 Ford Mustang in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1

"As far as I'm concerned, '73 was the last year of the Mustang," said Mustang guru Bob Perkins in a Jerry Heasley video. "And after was the Mustang II, so there was definitely a line drawn in the sand on when Mustang first generation production ended. So for me it was easy, '73 and older was first generation, and that's all I cared about."

For consignment, a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 showing 3,426 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car has many newer parts and a repaint that is just four years old. It will also come to you with the coveted Marti Report which details how many Mach 1's were produced with this car's exact original specifications.

Exterior
The big bodied Mustangs have an unmistakable shape with a high fastback sloping down to the squared off tail and while three part tail light remains, their shape is new and distinctive and introduced in 1971. Large panels here shine with the two stage gloss of Raven Black paint augmented by silver painted Mach 1 stripes that roll a wide band over the rocker panels, arching over the rear fascia, and a wedge shaped design that follows the hood's contours and takes in the muscular NACA ducts on each side.In the back, louvers over the almost horizontal rear window keep the sun from creating a sauna inside and a raised, rear wing implies downforce on the tail of the car at speed. Black inserts on the 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels are a fantastic complement and they hold 235/60R15's with a mid 2020 date code. Imperfections include cracking on the front painted bumper, chips on the frame of a rear marker, a scratch through the silver side stripe, and some bubbling down low.

Interior
The newer interior includes finely stitched door panels with some bold early 70's patterning leading to very nice black bucket seats with silver stripe inserts flanking an asymmetrical tuck and roll insert. The rear 2+2 presents a more narrow option. The 4 spoke steering wheel is rimmed in glossy black and leads to a glossy black instrument faceplate housing original looking gauges with a slight haze to the plexiglass discs that front them. The center stack shows some patina and has a space for a radio, a storage bin, and vent levers, while the clock is part of the center console which also houses the T-shaped automatic shifter in black plastic housing. The black loop carpet has vinyl mats built in, embossed with the galloping Ford horse. Our headliner is high and tight while the trunk is uncovered and painted black.

Drivetrain
The bay is very clean and houses a rebuilt 302ci which rotates the rebuilt C4 3-speed transmission sending power to the Ford 8" in back with 2.79 gears. Power brakes are onboard as a front disc conversion and rear drum. There is no air conditioning.

Undercarriage
Per our consignor, here is where we'll find a newer gas tank, newer suspension, and new fuel and brake lines.Conditions are clean and driver quality underneath with some typical surface rust and only a film of oil on the trans pan. Dual exhausts find their way to FlowMaster mufflers then exit out back via chrome tips. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in back. Power steering is included.

Drive-Ability
The trusty 302 fires right up and the big Mach is propelled forward after we move the T into Drive. A long nose looms ahead and a cavernous interior fills our rear view mirror, our view striated by the shade loving louvers. No hiccups here, just a solid driver with straight tracking and good braking and without fancy extras added, all functional items provided operate as intended, and we fly this Raven Black beauty back to the nest. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Baby got back, and Mach 1's are suddenly cool! Yes, their collectability has seen an incline in recent years and like so many classics that play second fiddle for a while, Mach 1's are finally finding their place in the sun. Here's a well sorted example in a fantastic color combo and nice interior. If you want to enter a car show like a bull in a china shop, you can't go wrong with a big bodied black Mustang, and here's a wild horse just chomping at the bit for someone to take the reins!
