As the Ford Motor Company neared its 100th anniversary in 2003, top
executives marked the milestone by reviving three iconic
nameplates, each of which had played a key role in shaping Ford's
commercial success and public image. The reborn Mustang and
Thunderbird clearly spoke to Ford's sales legacy, but it was the
legendary GT40-an icon of international motorsport and Le Mans
dominance, more valuable as a symbol than a sales driver-that
inspired the flagship of the initiative: the Ford GT.
Unveiled as a concept at the 2002 Detroit Motor Show, the GT
swiftly gained production approval. Under the guidance of Chief
Designer Camilo Pardo, its design paid faithful tribute to the
GT40's unmistakable profile, yet the engineering beneath was
thoroughly modern. The GT featured an advanced aluminum spaceframe
chassis and a body crafted from aluminum and superplastic-formed
materials-clear departures from the original. At its heart was a
550-horsepower supercharged 5.4-liter V8, paired with a six-speed
Ricardo transaxle. When new, this setup enabled the GT to reach 60
miles per hour in just 3.3 seconds and achieve a top speed of 205
mph. Throughout the car, updated homages to the original GT40 were
thoughtfully integrated-from the twin-nostril nose and round tail
lights to the perforated seats-preserving the spirit of the 1960s
legend while creating something entirely suited for the 21st
century.
Today, 20 years after the debut of this legendary era of Ford GT,
it is increasingly difficult to find a true single-owner example
that has been under the same watchful eye and within the same
garage from day one. This 2006 Ford GT is one such car remaining
with its original owner-legendary IMSA sports car racer John
O'Steen-since he purchased it new in August 2006 from Kerry Ford in
Cincinnati, Ohio. O'Steen should be a familiar name to even a
casual fan of road racing throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s having
piloted a Mazda-powered Lola T616 to a class win in the 1984 24
Hours of Le Mans and countless iconic Porsche GT and sports racing
prototypes, most famously the Coca-Cola-sponsored Akin Racing
935/84 and 962, in IMSA competition. While the Ford vs. Ferrari
battles were before his time, O'Steen was likely glued to the
television and radio as those global showdowns for sport car racing
dominance played out during the 60s and, like many, jumped at the
chance to acquire at the production Ford GT in the mid-2000s.
Finished in Mark IV Red Clearcoat, it's not inconceivable that the
popular color was selected due to the Coca-Cola livery sported by
O'Steen and his cars in the 1980s. Furthermore, it is specified
with all four factory offered options, including Painted Racing
Stripes, Light Weight Forged BBS Aluminum Wheels, Red Painted Brake
Calipers, and a McIntosh AM/FM CD system.
During its time in O'Steen's Florida collection the GT's clean

numerous services at Velde Ford of Vero Beach and today it features
just 1,545 miles at the time of cataloging. In addition, this
highly original Ford GT received a July 2025 service in preparation
for Broad Arrow's Monterey Jet Center Auction. Few modern supercars
manage to balance motorsport pedigree with real-world usability as
effortlessly as the Ford GT. Beyond its celebrated design and
dynamic brilliance, this example's preservation and notable single
ownership stand out. Owned by one of America's finest drivers-who
competed at the highest levels of international motorsport-it is an
offering that speaks to both discerning collectors and dedicated
drivers alike.
