Vehicle Description
1969 AMC AMX
When you see an "X" in the name of a car, it can mean a variety of
things. First, it could simply be an X, the letter. It could also
indicate all wheel drive such a BMW X5, or it might signify 10 as
in the Mitsubishi Evolution X and Touareg X, or Experimental as in
the case of the Pontiac GXP, the Buick GNX and the AMC AMX.
For consignment, a 1969 AMC AMX showing 26,944 miles, but the true
miles are unknown. This one sports the 390ci V8, a 750 cfm Holley
carb and Group 19 components that include a Mallory distributor,
and Edelbrock valve covers.
Exterior
Sitting on American Racing Torque Thrust 5 spoke wheels, this racy
car with its long front hood and beautiful long sloping back has
its luster on the Frost White paint from just over 20 years ago.
Just a few cosmetic pimples of rust showing mostly on the lower
doors. Gaps are decent and badging is kept to a minimum with a
simple circular AMX on the wide B pillar. Chrome is minimal as well
with just the bumpers which are inset into the body on the front
and rear. A ribbed stainless rocker trim is also seen grounding the
white along with the wheels. Looking at this design it was really
ahead of its time with the inset door handles, and the flush
mounted bumpers. Dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes peek out from
underneath the rear bumper.
Interior
Grabbing onto the inset door handle and giving it a swing, we see a
clean black vinyl smooth panel covering the door, a large rectangle
of wood applique is framed by thin chrome and houses the window
crank. A big armrest and door actuator for the inside is also hung
on the middle of the interior doors. Moving inside dual high back
buckets with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters and
headrests all in black vinyl and all looking fab. A wood applique
center console races from front to back and houses the shifter as
well as camouflages the center hump. In the center of the dash
rising out of the center console is a lighter and "ash " receiver,
AM/FM radio and another large wood applique panel with 2 round
vents and a hidden speaker which curves itself on to the dash top.
In front of the tri-pointed star centerwood rimmed steering wheel
is the original dash with a trio of inserts circular gauges with
white centers and black ringed outers. Temp and fan controls are
deeply inset to drivers left as are the headlight and wiper knobs.
Very nice black carpet covers the floors and with no rear seat,
there is plenty of storage and black carpet covering the
"hatchback" rear interior. A seam free, smooth black headliner
hovers above all this 1969 design interior.
Drivetrain
With being the beneficiary of a complete engine rebuild, the
original 390ci V8 which still pumps out 315hp is topped with a
4-barrel Holley 750cfm carburetor. On the back is a 3-speed M-12
automatic transmission and this throws power rearward to an AMC
Twin Grip 3.15 rear axle. There is a rebuilt correct fuel pump with
a vacuum pump, a K&N air filter within a shiny round air filter
holder with a blue and red surrounding stripe. This is all within a
highly detailed engine bay, with no corrosion and supple hoses and
aluminum ribbed Edelbrock valve covers. Wilwood disc brakes are
employed in the front and drums bring up the rear.
Undercarriage
Underneath is rust free with white unibody rockers, floor pans and
toe kicks. A black painted rust free driveshaft and rear pumpkin
are seen as well as black painted drum brakes and suspension all
around. The bottom end of the engine is drip free with a nice
transmission bell housing. Newer trunnions, ball joints, tie rod
ends, bushings, idler arm and bearings are seen on the suspension
and steering, and the consigner stated the drive shaft has been
balanced. A Dynomax dual muffler system is installed.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up and hit the test loop with obvious power
underfoot. The interior is clean and comfortable and the ride
provides smooth acceleration, good handling, solid stopping, and
quiet shifting for the automatic were experienced. The A/C is
inoperable, and the reverse lights do not illuminate, but all other
functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
AMX's have quietly gained a new audience and both values and
desirability reflect the renewed interest in this somewhat rare and
certainly unique pony car. When we have the honor to represent them
at the mall, they generally race out of here in short order.
Without the racing stripes, this one is a virtual sleeper, but if
you know, you know. It checks all the boxes!
