Vehicle Description
*1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL*The R107 Mercedes Benz SL is one of the
most famous generations of one of Mercedes's most famous
nameplates- and there is a good reason for that. Built for a
scarcely believable 18 years between 1971 and 1989, the R107 was
available with a long list of engine and trim options, but the
classic shape and world-class build quality were both constants.
From 1981 until 1985, the only SL available in the North American
market was the 380SL - and this 1983 car is a stunning example of
the marque.Finished in Signal Red, this 380SL has been meticulously
kept and shows a documented 24,842 original miles on the odometer.
Sold new via Holtz House of Vehicles in Rochester, NY, the car
moved with its second owner to the Seattle area in 1992. The North
American versions of the SL are notable for their quad-headlights
and 5-mph impact bumpers, which, although maligned in the era,
actually work well with the overall design. All R107 SLs were
fitted from the factory with a removable hard top, but over the
years many have been lost or damaged - this car features its
original top with all of the Mercedes tools needed to take it on
and off. The "Bundt" wheels on this car are classic Mercedes of the
era, found on a host of their vehicles and crafted out of a
lightweight alloy. The interior is in absolutely remarkable
condition. Finished in tan leather, the seats, carpets and steering
wheel are all in fantastic condition. Unlike the majority of R107s,
the wood trim on the center console is basically immaculate,
showing no cracking and minimal, if any, fading - both of which are
known to happen on these cars. As one of the ultimate luxury cars
of the day, this car came loaded for 1983 with features like power
windows, central locking, climate control, cruise control and a
Becker Gran Prix cassette stereo with power antenna in the rear.
All of these features function and make this car easy to use every
day if you so choose.Powering the 380SL is a 3.8-liter variant of
Mercedes's famed M117 V8 built for the US market. Due to tightening
emissions regulations, power for this engine is rated at 162
horsepower at 4,200 rpm but what you really want in a luxury car
like this is torque, and the 380 produces a stout 232 lb-ft at just
2,500 rpm. Power is then sent through a 4-speed automatic
transmission to the rear wheels. This SL might not be the most
powerful car out there, but it can comfortably cruise with modern
traffic and tops out at nearly 130 mph when you put your foot to
the floor. The R107 generation SL was the ultimate status symbol in
the 1970s and 1980s, and still looks stately and upscale more than
50 years after its debut. This car is an unbelievably nice specimen
that retains essentially all of its original books and paperwork,
down to the hang tags that were affixed to the climate and cruise
control when the first owner took delivery. For the ultimate in
top-down fun this summer, it's hard to imagine a better car than
this 380SL.*Key Features* * 3.8-Liter V8 * 162 Horsepower * 232
