Here is a gorgeous 1956 Thunderbird that has seen a great deal of restoration work in recent years. This includes paint, interior, soft top, engine, transmission, brakes, and more. Further, this example is a desirable P-code model with two tops, an original factory invoice, and a folder of receipts. It looks fantastic and is in turn-key condition for its next owner.
Built at the Los Angeles plant in late March 1956, this car was repainted in 2003 using its original color combination of code Z Thunderbird Green (body) and code E Snowshoe White (top). It is a rare color combination that looks fantastic on the Baby Bird design and is further accentuated by the wide whitewall tires. The chrome was replated in 2021; note the exhaust exits below the bumper to keep it looking like new. All lenses and emblems have been replaced as well. As a ’56 this one has the standard Continental Kit in back along with a porthole hard top. There is also a new white soft top that was professionally installed in 2025.
The P-code 312ci engine was rebuilt in 2021 and runs perfectly. It was converted from the challenging “Teapot” carburetor to a more conventional square bore Edelbrock 4-barrel with electric choke for improved safety and reliability. Note the gorgeous valve covers along with factory style markings throughout the detailed engine bay. The Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt in 2025 and works like new. There is also power steering for easy maneuvering along with a front disc brake conversion and dual reservoir master cylinder.
The code XF green and white vinyl interior was redone in 2020. This work went beyond door panels, carpeting, and seat covers. It also included the dashboard, gauges, horn ring, seat foam, kick panels, and floor mats. The colors are a remarkable match to the exterior, unlike some of the more “creative” combinations seen in cars from this era. A set of white seat belts was also installed and a removeable, matching center arm rest / cupholder is included. Everything works properly including the lights, turn signals, gauges, vacuum wipers, horn, radio, heater/defroster, and parking brakes.
There are lots of 1955-57 Thunderbirds out there, but you will find very few in this color and in this condition. In addition to the invoice dated 4-2-56 and many receipts, it also includes a 1956 Thunderbird brochure, handbook, and service manual. It is a great example of what a remarkable car Ford presented to the public 70 years ago.
