Vehicle Description
1964 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
"Top down for taking in the sun or top up for taking in the
weather, the '64 Sting Ray Convertible promises great times,
sparkling performance. And with things like Ball-Race steering and
a power team from a quartet of restless V8's and versatile
transmissions, a Corvette delivers what it promises. Both Sport
Coupe and Convertible feature better than ever ride qualities,
higher horsepower ratings for the two top engines, refined styling
and interior comfort." Corvettemuseum..org
For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing
14,591 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This one sports a 327
from the early 60's and a circa 1967 Muncie M20 transmission.
Exterior
One of seven colors available in 1964, Silver Blue is aptly named
as a silvery light blue coats the plastic fantastic in what some
would argue is the best color. In the right light, subtle body
lines are accentuated by shadows including the crease in each
fender and the horizontal twin fender vents that are holdovers from
the '63 and in their final year. A gentle crease runs the center of
the decklid and onto the cowl cover for the soft top, while exhaust
tips protrude through the body panel beneath the chrome bumper. The
hood vents are gone from 1963, but the torpedo shaped detail puts
the "sting" in Sting Ray, coming to a point just past the hood gap.
15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels are the perfect fit here wrapped in
even 205/70R15s all around. The black canvas top and its window,
the paint, and metalwork are all in great shape and we found no
glaring imperfections.
Interior
Swing open the doors to reveal a vertical pattern in black vinyl
split by a chrome trim piece, then a smooth bottom panel. All the
black is offset by chrome window cranks, sliding knob for a door
actuator, and two jet age reflectors. Black vinyl low back buckets
are flanking a center armrest which sits behind a chrome edged
center console. This houses a cue ball styled handle on a Hurst
shifter, then the slightly patina'd console climbs straight up to
house a side mounted and more modern AM/FM/Cassette stereo, various
knobs and pulls and large chrome bezel black faced clock. In front
of the driver and passenger are two graceful cowls, one over the
glovebox, and the other for the gauge cluster. Both have textured
black plastic background which is clean, with the glovebox having a
brushed aluminum door. The faux wood rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel
has a crossed flag center badge and shows some age. Black carpet in
the wheel wells also shows some age while it presents cleanly in
the cargo area. Overall, the interior shows some age, could use a
refresh and some detailing which would instantly bring it up to
gain additional points.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a driver quality 327ci V8 built on March 10,1962
and topped with a 4-barrel carburetor. It is mated to a circa 1967
Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear
axle with 3.36 gears and Positraction. Drum brakes remain at all
four corners.
Undercarriage
We're met with a driver quality underside that includes lots of
surface rust and oily grime on the pans of the engine and
transmission as well as cakey build up on the knuckles. There's oil
sling throughout and the rear differential has sooty build up. Dual
exhaust runs through cleanstock style mufflers just before exiting
through chrome tips in the rear valance. Suspension consists of
coil springs up front and the rear has a frame anchored three link
system with transverse strut rods and leaf spring.
Drive-Ability
We plant it on the clean seats and crank the 327 to life, shift the
Hurst into first, and head out onto the loop where the car runs
well and tracks straight. We note the left front drum is rubbing on
the backing plate causing an extra sound. And our checklist reveals
items that are inoperable and will need attention including the
wipers, horn, heater blower, radio, and clock. The remaining
functional items operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Here's a silver blue diamond in the rough, but it falls short of
being a project you're going to have to put on jack stands, unless
you're doing a full restoration. That's right, this baby can be
driven while you add your personal touches. The interior, engine
bay, and underside can all use a refresh and presents incredible
potential to realize its true beauty of form and function. As is,
it's a head turning classic Corvette, and that is worth its weight
in gold!
