This 1997 BMW 840Ci is a striking example of BMW's legendary E31
grand tourer, finished in a deep black paint laced with subtle blue
metallic flake that glimmers in the light. The elegant coupe
styling is complemented by a gray leather interior, offering a
clean and classic contrast to the bold exterior. Inside, a black
Alcantara headliner-installed in 2019-adds a refined, modern touch
while maintaining the cabin's luxurious feel. The 840Ci's long, low
profile and pillarless design make it one of the most distinctive
and timeless BMW silhouettes of its era.
Under the hood, this 8-Series is powered by BMW's 4.4L M62 V8
engine paired to a smooth 5-speed automatic transmission,
delivering the kind of effortless power and refined cruising the
model is known for. In 2011, the previous owner installed a custom
exhaust system with a MagnaFlow X-pipe and mufflers, giving the car
a deeper and more aggressive tone without overwhelming the cabin.
Maintenance during that ownership also included new Bosch spark
plugs and a coil for cylinder 5, as well as a heli-coil thread
repair on the same cylinder-demonstrating a commitment to proper
upkeep.
Since being acquired by the current owner in 2019, the 840Ci has
received a thorough mechanical refresh, particularly focused on the
suspension and braking systems. Between March and April 2020, the
rear suspension was completely overhauled with new ball joints,
wishbones, control arms, and rubber mountings. The front end
received fresh upper control arm bushings and new wheel hub
assemblies. The ride height was subtly lowered by 22mm using Eibach
Pro Kit springs paired with Bilstein B12 Pro shocks and struts,
resulting in sharper handling and a sportier stance. Additional
upgrades include rear bump stops, new rear muffler hangers, and a
stainless-steel brake line kit installed in late 2019 for improved
braking performance.
Grip is provided by BFGoodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S tires-245/40ZR18
at the front and 275/35ZR18 at the rear-with the front tires
replaced in 2016 and the rears installed during the 2020 suspension
refresh. With just the right blend of factory luxury, tasteful
upgrades, and documented maintenance, this 1997 BMW 840Ci stands as
a well-preserved and sorted example of a truly iconic modern
classic.
