Vehicle Description
1969 Ford LTD 2 Door Hardtop
"LTD by Ford. If you've never owned a Ford before, you're one of
the reasons we built this one. It has a track as wide as a
Cadillac's, for great road hugging. A wheelbase longer than a
Chevrolet's, for a smooth ride. A turning circle smaller than a
Plymouth's, for easy parking. More trunk space than a Buick
LeSabre. And a big Front Room nobody else offers. It also has a lot
of people looking, test driving, and changing their minds about
Ford." From the 1969 LTD print ad.
For consignment, 1969 Ford LTD two door hardtop showing 3,500
miles, but the true miles are unknown. We don't see many LTD's at
Classic Auto Mall. Why? They were common commuter cars meant to be
used and used up and although they made up 28% of Ford's production
in 1969, they represented only 2.1% of the domestic market at that
time. So, of the 164,000 produced in 1969, there simply aren't that
many that have survived.
Exterior
Single stage Light Aqua covers the big car smoothly and you might
be surprised to learn this is the original color of the car at a
time when only muscle cars veered from the earth tones and standard
hues of the day. Typically, you'd see a brown LTD in a car chase of
your favorite private eye television show, but the distinctive
covered headlights and grated grille look fantastic against an aqua
background, wonderfully sculpted to form a center pillar with
horizontal fins. The slab sided cruiser is complemented by a wide
and rounded C-pillar delineated from the body with surrounding
trim. But oh baby, it's the back of this car that may be the star.
Fantastic square tail lights with starburst centers over a panel of
red reflectors that span the entire width. 17-inch Torque Thrust
wheels give the pedestrian car a muscular look, wrapped in 50
series tires. Rust bubbles down low and various chips and mars make
up the entire list of exterior imperfections.
Interior
Standard aqua vinyl door panels present cleanly with simulated wood
accents and a compact window crank. The split bench is showroom
fresh with tweed inserts between aqua vinyl borders and headrests
and the rear bench mirrors color and condition. The steering wheel
shows some patina and leads to a curving dashboard resplendent in
simulated wood, including a scuff, and horizontal in execution. An
AM/FM radio is located high and left on the dash with levers for
vents and wipers down low, a unique and efficient layout. Blue loop
carpet below is in excellent condition and the aqua headliner is
high and tight. The LTD's large trunk shows usage, now mostly
barren with a gray cloth mat, spare tire, and jack.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a presentable 351ci Windsor V8 with a Holley
4-barrel carburetor in front of an FMX 3-speed automatic. Power is
sent to the mighty Ford 9" in back with 2.75 gears and power brakes
are supplied as new front discs and rear drums. Our consignor
states a new battery is on board.
Undercarriage
Driver quality but very clean underneath with some typical and
minimal surface rust and residual oil on the pan. Clean dual
exhaust travel through FlowMaster mufflers and exit behind the rear
quarter panels, out of sight. Suspension is made up of coil springs
in the front and a 3 link with coil springs and a panhard bar in
back.
Drive-Ability
As we settle in the Barnaby Jones theme fills our brain for some
reason. But the car starts up and is ready for a chase scene as we
track it around the test loop at modest speeds. The 351 delivers
good power and assisted braking means quick stops. Surely, this
wheel and tire set up provides better grip and we're pretty sure
Barnaby would have benefited from them on the twisty roads of
Malibu Canyon and the stock tires of his '73 LTD. The fuel gauge is
inaccurate, but all other functions operate as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
This car will not be here long, meaning LTD stands for limited
time! It's cool, relatively rare, well sorted, and an absolute
bargain. If you're looking to get into the show car and collector
world, this one is a great option. Though originally a commuter
car, it now sounds muscular and looks great and we'll end our
description here so you can make the call!
