This 1974 Indy 4900 is an amazing example of Maseratis last model
year of the Indy named after the factory 2 victories at the
Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940 by Warren Shaw in his 8CTF. About
1,000 Indys were built starting in 1969 with a 4.2 liter motor,
then a 4.7 liter and finally in its last 2 years the 4.9 liter
power unit. This particular example has a stunning presence.
Designed by Carrozzeria Vignale this 4-seater Tipo AM116 looks
highly elegant in its color sanded original Azzurro Artico exterior
color, white leather interior and gorgeous Campagnolo wheels. It
drives and runs excellently with its 340hp 4.9 liter 4 cam motor
fed by 4 throaty 2-barrel 32DCNF Webber carburetors all connecting
to its silky smooth ZF S 5-speed manual transmission. With the
exception of service parts, new carpet and 2 sections of leather
interior this matching numbers Tipo AM116 is original including the
paint and interior. The factory AC has been upgraded with a Denso
compressor and other modern components resulting in a high standard
climate control system. As stated on a copy of the included
original invoice this car comes with a Blaupunkt Goslar radio. With
its four seats and rear hatchback the car can be quite practical
beyond solo driving.This car has a particularly special provenance
as it was delivered in origin to the Persian Embassy in Rome for
H.I.H. Princess Ashraf Pahlavi, twin sister of Mohammad Reza
Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran. This has been confirmed by Archive
Storico Maserati SpA. This Indy stayed within the ownership of the
immediate royal family of the Princess, moving from Rome to Monaco
then Paris and San Francisco up until it was sold in 2017 to its
second and only other owner since.This particular Tipo AM116 has
very clean mechanicals and has been well cared for with included
comprehensive service records dating back to 1985. Within the last
10,000km it has had, new Wilton wool beige carpets, 2 sections of
front leather seats reupholstered, a new clutch assembly, new front
and rear exhaust sections, all 4 Koni shocks replaced, new front
end bushings, ball joints and steering linkage, all 4 brake
calipers rebuilt, new brake system actuator and hoses, new TRW LHM
brake fluid, new ignition coil unit, wires and spark plugs, all 4
DCNF carburetors rebuilt and tuned, both fuel pumps replaced, new
water pump, new power steering hoses, all new AC system including
compressor, custom made hoses, condenser and dryer, refurbished
fans and radiator, original road wheels sand blasted and powder
coatedThe car has its original spare wheel and tool kit and comes
with an owners manual, and a certification package from Maserati
SpA, which includes its original invoice and historical delivery
information. This Indy has a clear CA title and currently a CA
classic car plate.
