The Sportsman was manufactured at the Iron Mountain plant in
Michigan, employing standard convertible body shells augmented with
sedan delivery fenders and taillights. The exterior was a testament
to fine craftsmanship, featuring panels of the finest maple, birch,
and mahogany, each carved from solid wood. The attention to detail
extended to the interiors as well, with seats adorned in genuine
leather facings, available in tan or red, and complemented by
French stitching. The car boasted a power top and power windows,
including rear quarter panes-a luxury at the time.
Production of the Sportsman was limited to the years 1946 and 1947,
with a few models retitled and sold in 1948. Priced $500 above the
standard convertible, it was a luxury item, offering a style and
quality that rivaled the top-end models from competitors like GM
and Chrysler. Despite its limited run, the Sportsman left a lasting
impact, with a total of 3,629 units built over three years,
including 205 Mercury's exclusive to 1946.
Exterior Body is 9 out of 10 with very nice lines and nigh quality
paint. The Mahogany and Maple hard wood pieces were all 100% hand
crafted to the exact level of craftsmanship Ford required in
1947.
Paint has imperfections, scratches, chips, touches ups however
overall is stunningly beautiful.
Chrome and brightwork are in very nice condition and the engine bay
is extremely well detailed and fitted with.
The tidy interior is fitted with high quality camel leather
upholstery with dark tan carpets and a black Hartz cloth top. This
car has a hydraulic power convertible top.
Everything is brand new on this car including only 8 miles driven
since restoration. This was a 10 year project that recently was
completed in 2025.
It's an extremely rare Mercury that you not see out at car shows or
classic car events.
Runs and drives very nice, additionally easy to steer and handle.
The modern drivetrain makes it a drive anywhere and time hot rod
that gets endless attention.
Disclosures: Rear power window glass is currently not attached to
the motor and does not go up and down. The left driver's side front
chrome bumper has a small area that chrome is peeling. (See image)
There is a some lower front fender damage to the paint on drivers
side. Horn, Wipers and heater are currently non operational.
Overall this is a very impressive example of American automotive
engineering for 1947. Now 78 years later the technology has been
added for comfort and performance to continue the life of a true
marvel of rolling wood.
