Vehicle Description
We are offering a rare opportunity to own the 1932 Ford HiBoy Indy
Roadster, a masterpiece commissioned and built by the legendary
Johnny Capels. Johnny was not only a renowned Dirt Car driver but
also an IndyCar Chief Mechanic, Indycar Team Owner,
Championship-Winning USAC Dirt Car Team Owner, CART Founder and
Team Owner, and USAC Chairman. His racing legacy is embodied in
every detail of this stunning hot rod.
This Roadster features an all-steel Brookville body, that was
meticulously built and assembled by Johnny Capels himself, along
with contributions from a select group of professionals. The
Brookville body includes a modified firewall for engine setback,
ensuring optimal performance and weight distribution. Additionally,
an added steel tailpan enhances the car's structural integrity and
aesthetic appeal. The frame rails and frame were custom-built by
Johnny, showcasing his exceptional craftsmanship and attention to
detail. The suspension was also modified and built by Johnny to
achieve the precise handling he desired, making this Roadster as
nimble as it is powerful.
Powering this beauty is a 1979 French Ford Flathead V8 with a 263
cubic inch displacement, built by Johnny himself. It's paired with
a Borg Warner T-5 manual transmission, providing an exceptional
driving experience. The radiator and custom cooling system were
designed by Johnny to be both efficient and effective, ensuring
optimal engine performance and reliability. Johnny even designed
and built the custom air cleaner for the custom Holley carburetors,
adding a unique and functional touch to the engine bay. The car is
finished in a striking Viper Red, professionally painted to ensure
a flawless, head-turning appearance.
Inside, the Italian leather interior was expertly crafted by
Riddler Award Winner Dave Schober, adding a luxurious touch to this
already extraordinary vehicle. Even the primary exhaust pipes and
collectors were made by the noted racing fabricators, the Howerton
Brothers, ensuring top-tier performance and quality throughout.
Johnny personally drove this car over 27,000 miles, including an
unforgettable run on the Bonneville Salt Flats. He proudly drove it
to many car events and shows, where it won several awards over the
years, further solidifying its status as a well-respected and
admired hot rod. The car comes with a complete description of the
build in Johnny's own words, which is included in the photographs.
A copy of Street Rodder magazine from April 2005 featuring the car
as it was in the build process. Additionally, there's a YouTube
video link where Johnny talks about the motor build and the entire
car project, giving you a firsthand account of the passion and
expertise that went into creating this vehicle.
This is not just a showpiece; it's a well-sorted hot rod that's
