This European version 365 GT 2+2 was produced by Ferrari, October
1968 and delivered shortly thereafter to Sold new to Prince
Bernhard of The Netherlands and registered on Dutch license plates
"AA-13", how long it was kept by Prince Berhard is unknown. History
since and until 1998 is unknown. This 365 GT 2+2 found it was to
Swiss ownership and was kept in this ownership from 1998 to 2015.
While in this ownership, circa 2012 it received a complete repaint
in its original color. Circa 2013, the Borrani wire wheels were
restored. Circa 2014, the interior was redone in its original
color.
April 2015, this 365 was offered at auction at the Coys of
Kensington auction held during the Techno Classica in Essen,
Germany.
November 2015, this owned and being sold by Landmark Car Company in
London, England. At the time, it was inspected by well-known and
respected Ferrari specialist Terry Hoyle, for a California Ferrari
enthusiast, the PPI is as follows:
12th November 2015, Re-Ferrari 365 GT2+2 #11699GT:
• I have now visited Landmark Cars and checked the Ferrari 365 GT
2+2 for a second time. The first to see how the car would qualify
for the Ferrari Classiche Certification and now to drive and carry
out a mechanical check. The car is a very good example that apart
from one fuel pump being the wrong type, (there are two fitted), I
am in no doubt that it qualifies for the Classiche. I raised the
car up and although the underside of the body and chassis were
under-sealed, I couldn't find any trace of corrosion or rust. Brake
discs and pads are fine. No leaks from the shocks or gaiters. The
motor has obviously been removed for I believe a oil sump leak.
Whilst it was out, I could see that the under-bonnet has been
refurbished, I also understand the bonnet (hood) quilt was
replaced. I then drove the car for approx. 15 miles to allow it to
reach the correct temperature.
• Road Test Observations: Oil temp' gauge not working, O/S
passenger window not working, Brake require bleeding, Carburetors
need tuning. Mixtures and balance. Because of lack of use, I would
recommend an annual service, fluids etc. On my return to the
workshop, I carried out a Compression Test on 3 random cylinders. I
believe you have had the results of the original 12 tests. My
results with a warm motor were as before apart from no. 8. I had
120 psi. with my gauge. We then tested again with the Landmark
gauge. It was also 120 psi. A mistake some-how had been made
previously. I believe that with further mileage this reading will
increase. The car drives well. Pick up and power are as expected.
The gearbox and axle are quiet on drive and de-cel. Steering and
ride are fine. Brakes are slightly erratic, hence I have
recommended bleeding. This car in its present condition represents
a good purchase and investment. If you need further information
please call or email: Best regards, Terry Hoyle
Subsequently purchased by the California Ferrari Enthusiast, the
365 GT 2+2 was exported from the UK and imported to Sacramento,
California, USA. It was kept in this ownership through February
2024 and when it was offered through the Broad Arrow - Hagerty
Online Auction platform.
Purchased through this online auction by a very good friend of
Autosport Designs and from that very good friend that I hope reads
this, he didn't think a prepurchase inspection was needed due to
the auction description, I believe the phrased used was, "how bad
could it be."
Fast forward to having won the auction, this gentleman collector
from the Bay Area decided to drive to Sacramento to collect his new
Ferrari for a pleasurable drive back to San Francisco or at least
that was the plan lol. The first 40 miles seems pleasurable until
the 365 started to overheat and eventually shut itself off. A
pleasurable flatbed right later or at least I hope it was somewhat
pleasurable, the 365 was pushed into the storage facility with his
other automobiles.
At that point, he checked with various Ferrari specialist who are
as booked as all of us restorers and with a waiting list for even
for an inspection, it was May 2025 before the 365 was seen by the
doctor, Phil Reilly and Co, Penngrove, California for
inspection.
In transparency, the inspection results are as follows:
• Used bore scope to check condition of cylinder #7 after removed
spark plug showing significant rust. Discovered major rust in
cylinder and standing water on piston. Attempted to remove spark
plug #8 after and technician stated "it will not come out." Spark
plug #8 is completely rusted into engine and will not come out.
Removed remaining spark plugs and checked remaining cylinder
conditions with bore scope, found rust and signs of water/damage in
all other cylinders. Also noted rusty water dripping from exhaust
indicating water from cooling system is moving into a cylinder and
out through the head. Wrote report with pictures to email to
customer. Engine will need to be removed and disassembled for full
assessment of damage and rebuilding.
So, that is where we are today. Our friend has decided with all of
his other projects, he would prefer to offer this 365 GT 2+2 for
purchase in as-is condition, what was and will still be a perfectly
drivable 365 GT 2+2 with excellent history, but which will now need
an engine rebuild by its next new custodian.
The 365 GT is available for viewing by appoint in the San Francisco
area and we are welcoming, fair and reasonable offers for its
purchase. That's all folks.
