Vehicle Description
1964 Chevrolet Impala Convertible
The 1964 Chevrolet Impala convertible represents one of the
quintessential symbols of American automotive design during the
1960s. Widely celebrated for its sleek style, robust performance,
and status as a cultural icon, this vehicle continues to inspire
admiration from car enthusiasts and collectors alike. An astounding
884,600 Impalas were produced in 1964 making them one of the most
common cars on the road at the time with the '64 being the last
year of the third generation.
For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala Convertible showing 22,970
miles, but the true miles are unknown. It has a date correct
powerplant, dual exhaust, and a two stage paint job and presents as
a stunning representative of the once ubiquitous automobile.
Exterior
Long sleek panels are made even sleeker with the coverage of
Daytona Blue but the chrome and polished trim should not be
overlooked as key contributors to this car's visual presence. The
distinctive nose and tail both wear beautiful chrome bumpers and
the rear fascia is adorned with a band of white that matches the
canvas top. Side trim begins as a spear on the front fender and
flows to encircle the Impala emblem in back, returning switchback
style as straight trim all the way to the front wheel opening. Dual
headlights are perched in a ribbed base that seamlessly connects to
the grille where black inserts are replaced by open space, inviting
air into the engine bay. 14-inch wheels with wire wheel covers hold
215/75R14's with a late 2023 date code. Some scuffs on the wrap
around bumpers, a bubble low on a door, and some typical
discoloration to the white top are the only imperfections we
note.
Interior
Blue vinyl door panels include grommet trim on the inserts and both
smooth and ribbed panels for a handsome and clean presentation.
These patterns are repeated on the split bench up front where some
minor compression is observed on the driver's side. Push the ornate
chrome seat shell forward reveals a rear bench that is in great
shape with some small blemishes in the middle section. Our two tone
steering wheel shows some usage but is in very nice condition and
it leads to a 60's simple dashboard with horizontal orientation for
the speedometer and adjacent gauges and aluminum trim on the mid
panel which houses knobs and the AM/FM/Cassette radio, obviously
aftermarket but fitting perfectly. As a column shift car, the floor
is open and covered in blue loop carpet and the trunk is just as
clean with fitted mats in each section.
Drivetrain
A 283ci V8 is under the hood in near spotless condition, topped by
a 2-barrel carburetor and rated at 195 horsepower. A Powerglide
2-speed automatic is behind it, routing power to the rear axle and
3.08 gears. A power brake booster helps the drums brakes assist the
stopping on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
A few drops of oil, some typical surface rust, and general patina
are the only things revealing some age. Otherwise, it's clean
underneath and a pair of Cherrybomb mufflers are connected to the
dual exhaust system which finds its way to the back, exiting via
chrome tips. Coil spring suspension is found up front, matched with
a 3 link, coil springs and a panhard bar in the back.
Drive-Ability
The smooth running 283 sets this cruiser on its way while the
Cherrybombs allow for some sweet exhaust tones beyond that long
decklid. Fresh tires and a well maintained car delivers a
comfortable ride that tracks straight, handles well, and stops with
authority. However, the icing in the cake is that all functions on
this easy rider operate as they should save for the power top not
going back up when prompted, but the motor does run, so we may have
a low fluid situation. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
With so many Impalas being produced in the 60's, it's no wonder
there is still a large and fervent enthusiast community, plus
thousands of others who have fond memories of these cars, and
that's why good ones don't last long at Classic Auto Mall. Triple
tail lights, dual antennae, and fuel door trim are just a few of
the attributes that make these Impalas epically cool and forever
classic. This is one you should consider if you've been hunting for
an Impala.
