Car for the Road Books
Like Enzo Ferrari, Colin Chapman was not primarily interested in
road cars, but saw production of Lotus vehicles as a means for
revenue with which to support racing. An ambitious road car, the
Type 14 Elite would become the world's first structural composite
monocoque automobile - featuring a glass-reinforced composite body
and chassis for the entire load-bearing structure of the car, as
well as 'Chapman strut' suspension, 1.2L Coventry Climax engine and
ZF Transmission. According to Gordon Murray, an Elite is the best
proportioned front-engined motor car ever made.
