first genuine American sporting automobiles, the Auburn Boattail
Speedster was produced sporadically from 1929 through 1935, its
elegant two-seat roadster coachwork and jaunty 4.4L Lycoming
Straight Eight engine were the defining elements of style and speed
in the late '20s and early '30s. This unique 1932 Auburn 898-A
Boattail Speedster was one of 39 built and was the subject of a
comprehensive frame-off nut and bolt restoration, completed by
Jerry Richman, professional Auburn and Lincoln Restoration
specialist. Jerry has undertaken several 100-point Auburn
restoration projects and this was the car he built he built to show
and go and to actually be a pleasure to drive. The
restoration costs were well over $300,000 alone. This 1932 Auburn
898-A started by incorporating an all-steel Auburn Boattail body
placed on a nut and bolt restored original Auburn frame, with all
parts machined to fit seamlessly into the chassis for an authentic
presentation. Under the hood appears factory correct with
a Auburn Lycoming Straight 8 engine, but is actually a better
built, more dependable, with a little higher horsepower Buick block
that was topped off with components to recreate the famous Lycoming
straight 8, but runs much better and is mated to a period correct,
better shifting, Packard 1935 manual transmission and a 1935
Packard air-operated, 2-speed rear end that is great for city
driving in first gear and will actually do the speed limit on the
freeway in second gear. The brakes were upgraded from mechanical to
Bendix hydraulic at a cost of over 10k alone and machined to fit
the Auburn chrome spoke wheels. The engine, transmission, rear end
and brakes were precisely machined to correctly fit the Auburn
chassis as well. This exquisite Auburn American Dream
Machine is rolling in correct, rebuilt and re-chromed, Auburn Prop
Center, knock off spoke wheels and a new set of dual side wide
white tires for that investment grade Auburn
look. EXTERIOR: Meticulous frame-off restoration
