Holy Grail- a strong term but most likely very appropriate for this
rare, rare MGA Twin Cam. It's kinda a long story so please bear
with me... This is the first left hand drive Twin Cam ever produced
and the first sent to the US. We've had some rare twin cams but
this one ranks right up there with the Paris Auto Show Twin Cam we
owned that is now in a private collection.
Here is the story of YD3-504- this very car. Built in England in
the first week of May 1958 this car was destined to be sent to
California (where else) to the iconic west coast leader of the US
British automotive industry named Kjell Qvale. Since this was the
4th MGA Twin Cam made Qvale was sent the car with the understanding
that it was to be kept under wraps until MG did its press release
of this brand-new model. Qvale being Qvale he did not sit on his
hands but rather upon receiving the car, he immediately had his
mechanic, Joe Huffaker, prepare the car to be entered in its first
race, a full two weeks before the factory press release.
According to a conversation with Joe Huffaker in 2007, he
remembered the car being delivered to Kjell. Huffaker indicated he
"did not trust" the British cam shafts. New camshafts were
manufactured and installed. He told the owner at that time that the
car was campaigned for three races only. The Qvale racing team then
moved on to racing Jaguars. It should be said that Joe Huffaker is
well known for his race engines and modifications and the Huffaker
Race Group is still active today.
Ok so Qvale has his drivers race the car at Vaca Valley Raceway,
Nevada Grand Prix and then Laguna Seca in California. Quite an
auspicious start for the very beginning of Twin Cam production and
racing. The car went on to do more racing in different hands and
then traveled to Detroit in 1963 where it is again raced at
Waterford Hill race track in Michigan from 1963 to 1966, and then
ultimately put into storage. Fast forward 40 plus storage years to
2007 when the rare twin was found by an MG collector extraordinaire
finds the car, starts the research and restoration of this truly
unique car.
That leads us to today. We have this beautifully restored super
rare race twin cam in our possession with a written and
photographic history unlike any we have seen before. Race programs
from the races the car was in, hundreds of restoration photos that
document the history and restoration of 504. Part of the original
roll bar with the tech inspection stickers attached. Look at the
photos- this is MG and SCCA history.
The quality of this car is incredible. It's still running its
original engine (check out the original aluminium tag, which is
also how this car is titled, not uncommon back in the day), that
has been completely rebuilt. The metal and paint are amazing. The
rare race seats are present. The limited slip differential is
present. A correct oil cooler is visible behind the recognizable
MGA chrome grill. Polished and ported head, ported SU Carbs, high
compression pistons. Wow what a unique car.
Yes, there is also a Heritage Trust Certificate that outlines that
this car is restored to its factory colors with its factory
supplied race seats.
Please take the time to look through the photo and written history
on this MG- it's very hard to condense into this short description.
In addition to what's shown in the pictures there are many, many
more pics of the original components, the restoration process and
how the car got to be as it is today.
This is a truly unique and investment grade car.
Drive it, show it, keep it in a bubble and polish it as a prized
possession, the choice is yours once you make it yours.
We stand behind our thoughts on this car by offering our travel
expenses guarantee- come see the car and if we have materially
misrepresented its condition, we will gladly pay half of your
travel expenses up to $500.00- this offer had been in place since
